Alright long story short picked this up last Sat. at a gunshow for $105. Cleaned the barrel up and fired 20 rounds through it flawlessly. Some purists would leave it alone, but it was cheap and there is always room for improvement, also its a pretty common model, so decided to start off redoing the stock. :) Heres my build thread from when I got it forward.

After taking it apart and cleaning it up once. You can see some of the scarring on the stock, cant wait to get rid of it, will probably reblue the metal as well.

All I can say is don't get anxious once you refinish the stock. If you think it is dry... wait another day before reassembling. My excitement to see the finished product always ends up fucking me. LoL.

Lol well im gonna sand here in a few minutes with a pretty dry stock, and let it completely dry tomorrow. Then start staining late tomorrow night/wednesday and hopefully have it done lat wed/early thurs to dry all of thurs and friday, and sat morning to be reassembled so i can go fire some surplus ammo through. :)

Yeah I hope it turns out good, Im having to use some 60 grit on the stock since some of the old finish didnt come off after stripping, sonna go back over it with 220, then 400 prob to finish.

If you have any low places like bruises in the wood you can pull them out with steam, just hold the bruise over a boiling pot until the wood swells back out. That might save you some sanding :goodjob:

105 bucks, man i need to get me one. Looks like a great little project. Be sure to post more pics tonight once the sanding commences.

Well the wood isnt as light as I would like, but After 4 hours of sanding after I stripped it, im done with it lol. Had a lot of finish left after stripping, so i started off using 60, then went down to 220, then 400. Finish is fine now, and most of the grain came through so Im gonna be staining tonigh/tomorrow. Pics coming tonight.

Now see, wouldn't it just be so much easier to go and buy a $50 black synthetic monte carlo stock. LOL

12-15-2009, 06:13 PM

and yes the metal looks great. But figured i would offer, i have a media blaster that spends most its time collecting dust lol.

I am a fan of the wood monte carlo stocks. That is what I used when i built my mauser. Anywho.. Let me know if you need someone to drill and tap you some scope mounts! With all of us working together we could have it knocked out in no time.

NOTE: IF you plan on taking off the iron sights make sure you buy alot of butane or propane for whatever kind of torch your going to use. They have those lead welded or lead soldered and they are a BITCH to get off.

12-15-2009, 07:30 PM
Yeah thanks for the offers guy...im hoping to find an old beat up one of these that I can really dig into, this ones just gonna be a simple shooter. Gonne be coldbluing with a paste I got at a local gunshop. Ill let yall know how it works out. On another note what should i use to wipe off the stock before i stain? Should i use some rubbing alcohol to wipe away finger oils, etc, or just a dry cloth? Also same question for the barrel on the places I want to touch up can i just wipe it with rubbing alcohol and then apply the bluing, would that be good enough for degreasing? Im just gonna be touching up so not trying to strip the blue completely off the metalwork.

makes me want one. anyone have one forsale? lol

They're all over if you look around, J&G Sales has some really good deals right now ($80): http://www.jgsales.com/product_info.php/rifles/russian/p/mosin-nagant-91-30-round-receiver-rifle%2C-7-62x54r-caliber-/cPath/209_261/products_id/1041?osCsid=5856a03b163bcadf48aa9be8233ad113

(gotta pay shipping/FFL, but they're still pretty cheap).

AIMsurplus.com usually has them pretty cheap, and you can also sometimes find them locally for alright deals (Bullseye in Lville usually has a few crates of them, or at least they did a while back when I was there). You can also pay $30 to get a Curio and Relic license from the ATF and then get dealer access to places like Century Firearms for even cheaper deals.

Be sure to check out www.7.62x54r.net (and their forums) for tons of info about them as well, these guns have tons of really interesting history behind them.

Ammo is also pretty low for these things right now too which is great (440 round can of surplus ammo for like $80 or so). Out of every gun I have, my Mosin's are always the most entertaining and fun overall (esp if you shoot them at an indoor range, everyone in the place will run over to see what the noise/flash is about). Shooting M44's with the bayonet out always gets fun looks too :).

Best bet is going to gun shows, you end up being able to check the gun out before you buy it which is a plus. And if you dont have a C&R or a FFL you really cant order firearms online. I got mine for $105 with a counterbored barrel, and the whole gun was in good shape. After shipping and all that crap it would end up being around that much online, and you usually dont get to specify a grade for the weapons that are 79-89 bucks or less, its like a grab bag type deal.
Ammo is low, but not as low as it was. Because of the interest, ammo has went up a good bit. I bought 40 rounds at the show for 10 bucks. 440-450 rounds was selling for 129 iirc.

I dont know if Id mess with your stock or not, it looks great. unless you have some major flaws or just want a different color/stain I wouldnt bother....it takes some time...and splinters are a huge pain hah.

careful with the cold blue, normally has a very distinct smell that doesn't go away.

Yeah the cold blue is absolute crap if you dont strip the metal all the way down. Doesnt work for touchup for me. It smells like ass, but it hasnt lingered on the buttplate I put it on.

Indeed it does, gotta do some range testing, but at 25 yards barely able to see since it was at dark, hit 7/10 clays placed on a log with 10 shots. 3 of the clays were placed funny...eventually had to pull out the pistol and blow those bitches apart. :)

Mosin Nagants are fun and cheap. I had one that i sold about 2 months ago. Ammo around here was kinda expensive. It averaged about 1.10-1.25 a round. Kicked like a bitch and loud as hell!

Yup its very fun and still cheap lol. Ammo is usually like $4-7 per 20 at shows.
