Just wondering what kind of seafood people like here in the south. I'm starting a business here shipping Alaskan seafood in and I am trying to find out what people want. As it is right now I have:

Jumbo King Crab
Halibut Fillets(Or has anyone ever tried halibut before?)
Smoked Halibut Fillets
Silver, King, and Red Salmon Fillets
Chum Fillets

None of the farm raised BS seafood either, everything I'm selling was caught wild in Alaska which makes for a better taste and texture than fish that are farm raised. At any rate, any response or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Halibut is really good if you dont like that fishy taste, I've never liked salmon cause of the taste but I tried some salmon down here and it was 10 times worse.. I didnt think there was much of a difference but there is. I'm probably going to get a good amount of samples in, especially halibut just to see what people think.

I dont know what other fish you can get from alaska besides the ones you have posted above..

But from work experience i know that ppl down here, at least on the southside, like Tilapia, Catfish (whole, nuggets, and fillets), Silverbrite Salmon, Ocean Perch, and shrimp. I get a few requests for rainbow trout and we sell the hell out of frozen whiting (we dont get fresh because it comes in frozen and looks like crap when it thaws out.) Maybe some scallops if you can get a good price on them..

hope that helps

Surely does, scallops are an option as well I'm was not sure how well it would sell down here. The restaurants I've talked to complain about 1. Not being able to get the type of fish they want and 2. people not knowing much more than crab, shrimp, lobster, and catfish. So you have a seafood restaurant? Originally I was going to try and appeal to only restaurants but my ideas are changing from day to day.

lol that is the other thing about salmon, the damn bones. I always hated that, and as bad as it sounds although I lived in Alaska for 18 years I dont think I ever tried smoked salmon.. I'll have to try it when I take my next trip up there.

No, i dont own a restaurant. I unfortunately am the Asst. meat department manager at kroger. Hoping like hell i get either the internship i applied for or a different job i have lined up so i can put in a two week notice ASAP. I agree.. the ppl down here dont know anything besides crab, shrimp, lobster, and catfish. Like i said, we do sell alot of perch and tilapia too.

Snow Crab > King Crab. I love perch and talapia but I don't know if you can get those from Alaska.

Nah no perch or talapia coming in from Alaska.. I may also see about getting fresh fish from other places as well though. The problem is the price is going to be a little higher for fresh fish vs. farm raised, I really appreciate the responses.

our wild caught perch comes from Canada and China.

Farm raised tilapia comes from ecuador and honduras

we dont get much wild caught, just the perch.. all the rest is farm raised
