I'm shipping to Air Force basic training in less than two weeks...

I've been waiting 9 months for this day.. I'm all gung-ho for it, but now that the clock is ticking down, I can't lie that I'm not nervous!

Anyone else been there and done that? Any words of advice?

What are the qualifications to be able to even take that test? I'm in the air force and im in school and don't wanna join rotc so i figured i would just go the other route but i haven't looked into it yet.

you have to have a 4 year degree. And they will tell you that you have to have a 3.2 gpa in college, but I don't, but told them I wanted to take the test anyway. So with that, I had to do really well on the test, which I did. So now it's just up to the interview

no problem. It's actually pretty tough getting in right now as an officer because of the job market. The AF met all of their recruiting quotas last year, and filled every open officer job they had. The main positions they are looking for right now are pilots and navigators believe it or not.

thanks guys, the worst thing I think is gonna be the Christmas break.. I'll only be 5 days in when the training center shuts down. So I'm pretty sure that means I'm gonna be the lowest man on the totem pole for an extra two weeks.. lol. Oh well, my tech school will be in Monteray California, I'll just keep reminding myself...

my dad is a retired AF Colonel, and the one thing he has stressed over and over is to take care of your NCO's. Going in thinking you are hot shit bc you have a shiny rank on your collar will make things very difficult for you.

if you go officer, I would suggest staying 20 years. Nobody can touch the retirement pay the military pays

bdydrpdmazda
12-03-2009, 08:54 PM
i think its either 25 or 27 years that gives you 100% of your pay and benefits, 20 years will only get you like 50%

Anyone else been there and done that? Any words of advice?

Well, going to Chair Force boot camp is like taking a trip to a rehab clinic.

Words of advice are as follows.

1. Do EXACTLY what they tell you to do.
2. Don't sneak Porn into Boot Camp. If your friends or parent send you some, get rid of it.
3. Do your VERY best. ESPECIALLY in your secondary school. The better you do, the better your number will be to hand pick your orders following school. Do the best, you get the best pick of everything available. Least thats how it was when I went through Boot Camp.
4. Don't meet some bimbo and get married. Chicks look for patsies fresh out of boot camp to latch on to. You will go on deployment, come home and all your shit will be gone.

The Holy Grail of information I am about to bestow upon you. So read carefully.

5. When you get a prostitute (don't say you won't, EVERYONE does) ALWAYS!!!!! and I mean ALWAYS!!!!!! do her with your boots on. Here's the reason why. In most foreign countries, unless you go to an established brothel, Hookers are in league with bad people. Yes, I know, it's hard to believe but it's true. And with that being said, if you get attacked and try to run they will sprinkle broken glass outside the door. If you have no boots on, you run through the glass.....down, robbed, beaten and maybe kidnapped and killed. But......enterprising young GI that you are because you listened to Grandpa Glides, you kept your Whore Stomping boots on and are free to kick a little ass with your jimmy swinging. Because there is NO beatdown like a beatdown given from a man with no clothes on.

6. GO PLACES!!!!!. Don't screw up like I did. My first orders were to Japan, I turned them down for orders to Florida. Now, I did see 17 different countries, banged 7 prostitutes (using the Grocery Store theory, Double Bag the product to prevent breakage) hung out with Russian fisherman, attacked by Green Peace, picked up by the African Militia at gunpoint, had our boat taken by a team of 8 Navy Seals in less than 8 minutes and taken into custody in a Presidential Gun Scare. So my orders turned out to be great. But don't mess up and take orders close to home cause of this and that. Get the fuck out and see shit man. You will remember it for the rest of your life.

7. DO NOT GET INTO TROUBLE OVERSEAS!!!!!!

8. Had to add this. You will get a class on this most likely after getting there. But do not buy a car from the local Butt Rape car lots or Motorcycle dealers that are right around base. You will get hosed. high interest rates, low quality. It won't matter much to you since they will take it out of your pay and you never see it.....but don't do it. Trust me on this cause I got my ass opened up by one of em when I first got there over a Motorcycle. It takes years for your butt to close after that one.

There you have it. Go.....have fun.....get your shit on and live it up man.

Marines have a chip on their shoulder - but it's a VOLUNTEER service. To me --- if you wear the uniform I don't care which one it is.

I did 8 in the Air Force... guess what, I looked at the pay - outside of special assignments it's the same. So why not work smarter for the same amount?

I GUARANTEE you I've been shot at more than a lot of Marines and have seen more hostile action than a lot of them as well.

I just made the decision that if I'm gonna get shit for pay REGARDLESS, I'll choose an organization where I can think and where I get a good quality of life. The Air Force has spec ops as well - tell an Air Force Comobat Controller he's a pussy. Tell an Air Force Pararescue troop that it's the "Cheer" Force and count how many pieces he rips you in to.

It's all about what you want. There is nothing sexy about holding a rifle and getting shot at for what the military pays. But that is what J'SON thinks. Some1 will think something diff and that's what makes it cool. I chose to sit on an airplane at 40,000+ feet and get shot at by surface to air missles. In MY job... they don't box u up and ship u home... they just mail a letter. When things go wrong in flight there is no use for a body-bag.

Diff strokes for different folks.

Thank you ALL for your service!!!

I will say one thing. My cousin was an Air Force Combat Controller. And I wouldn't call him gay unless someone paid me a lot of money to do so. He taught Drownproofing and works for FATS now. He still holds records in wrestling in Germany and on the Rugby Pitch (field) he was a holy terror.

But, since your Father was in the Air Force then he will know about the inter-branch rivalries. Nobody here is putting down your Fathers exploits in the war brother, if anything I am sure everyone here would shake his hand and give the nod of respect offered to anyone that sacrificed their lives to protect other Americans and keep our freedom free.

I was in the Navy...and we own the Marines!!!!!! :D

yeah, I would hate to be in one. If something fucks up and u get hit, you are screwed. at least in an airplane you can eject most of the time

Glad u said "MOST" of the time. LOL.. unless you flew on this guy like I did for 8 years (the below pic is actually my bird when I was at Gielenkirchen (germany) supporting NATO.

There is a bailout chute in every AWACS airplane - it was a $6 million dollar modification PER JET (33 jets in inventory, 1 was lost due to a bird strike in Alaska). When they started the testing they used a 220lb dummy - charged the system and that dummy only cleared the plane by 3 inches... the dummy cleared out about 20 antennaes along the underside of a plane going 300 mph. LOL.

The ONLY way a person could ACTUALLY use the bail-out chute w/out hitting antennaes is if they weighed 350lbs. Well, if u weigh 350lbs you're NOT gonna be in the Air Force, much LESS be on flying status. LOL. So they decided that the bail-out chute would not be used and removed all parachutes from the airframe.

There was an on-going joke that if we ever needed to use the bail-out chute, the lowest ranking man gets to go 1st (so he would die by clearing the million and one antennas under the jet). LOL

Another note about bailing out of a Boeing 707... if the pilot can hold the plane at the proper attitude, altitude and speed for SUCCESSFUL bail-outs, then that means that there's nothing wrong w/ the plane - so why are you trying to jump out of it. LOL. If the plane is functioning good enuff to maintain those specs, then it's functioning good enough to land it.

Way to go America --- your tax dollars at work.

whatever u call it, it doesnt matter. I'd prefer the air force over all others. Pays well, works reasonable, not as much life threat and the tags look better than Army tags. (Sept FL, they have pretty navy tags)

But I know quite a few Air Force retirees and they go on and on about the great times and lovely quality of life the USAF has brought them and if I cannot continue to work here in civilian life I will wholly consider the USAF over all others. As Baby J stated, work smarter not harder.

Keep your chin up at all times, even if you get punished. And don't jack up the serial numbers on your "money list" (you'll see what i mean when you get there).

AF basic is not a physical exercise, it's a mental game. I went through Lackland three weeks after returning from soccer camp - left 6 weeks later in worse physical condition than i arrived. They will break you mentally, but it's only for your own good.

SHUT THE FUCK UP

DO NOT VOLUNTEER FOR ANYTHING (except bed aligner or shoe aligner) trust me i know

DO NOT SNEEK MAIL TO CHAPEL GUIDE

DONT BE A PUSSY BITCH AND WASH OUT OF BOOT CAMP

DO NOT TELL ANYONE IF YOU HAVE A MEDICAL CONDITION (especially in the airforce they will throw you out for anything as they are overmanned)

YOU WILL GET THE "DORM COUGH" (its like pnemonia or whooping cough but i think it has something to do with all the shots they give you) EAT THE LOZENGES LIKE CANDY TO FIGHT IT OR THE LITTLE RED PILLS FROM THE DESPENCARY

DO NOT GET SCARED

DO NOT PUT 3 ROUND BURST ON IT DOESNT WORK AND WILL GET YOU SMOKED BY THE TI (i know because i tried and the m16 almost exploded..... it kinda did actually and i got fucking drilled)

Hey man, it's Air Force Basic, don't be nervous. "Gung-ho" is a Marine term btw, LOL. I really don't think AF has any terms like that, I mean they just started PT tests last year, they can't be too "gung-ho." You're going to Monterey huh? You going to be a Linguist? Don't go for PJ. Use your brain --- select something that you can use more readily on the outside. One day you WILL get out --- you wanna take something with you. When you give the best years of your life to an organization the tradeoff better be WELL worth it. "Glory jobs" are kool - but be smart about it.
