Well, I finally took my son hunting for the first time. He's 10, but been asking me to take him for a year or two now. He was just too young before, but I thought he was finally ready this year. I really wanted to do this as a straight "Father/Son" thing. Know what I mean?
We hunted in Greene county at a friend of mine's property. He has 15 acres or so, but it is bordered by a WMA (Redlands) and a private hunting club on the other. So we basically were in the middle of the woods. No phone service, no water, no electricity......priceless, right? Right.
Anyway, we only went for a couple of days because I had other plans this weekend. We stopped by Wally world to buy supplies and headed up there. I went with another buddy of mine who I've known for over 25 yrs. He brought his young daughter as it was his weekend with her. She and my son get along great, so it was perfect.
The property has a small cabin, but as mentioned, no electricity nor water. We had beds to sleep on and a door to keep the bears out at night. No need for anything else, right? Anyway, it was great. We hunted that afternoon until dark. My son was so excited that he could hardly stay still, which probably explains why we didn't see anything....:D, but it was just fun to watch him be all excited about it. We cooked dinner that night by the light of lanterns and went to bed early. Next morning, got up and bundled up to head out. Again, he was very fidgety, but he atleast got a laugh out of two squirrels fighting....:lmfao: It was just fun watching him snap his head around like the boogey man was coming up the hallway every time a small noise was heard. Before we left, I figured I'd let him throw a few rounds down stream, so we set up a shooting "range" to play for a couple of hours. We even walked off some targets at a little over 100yds. My son ROCKED shooting at the targets. He was shooting with my GSG5 and a bolt action Marlin 22 mag. He tagged the 100+yd targets like they were 10 yds away. Ok.....he was shooting using an old chair for a rest, but he's only 10 and loves to shoot so.....give me a little levity here.....:D
Anyway, we had a great time talking and laughing and getting him to like going hunting with Dad. It was worth all the money in the world.

Yeahh, more people should learn its about the experience more than the actual hunting. I hunt with my Gf's dad and its always awesome to me.

That's the funny thing, we didn't have a drop of Hooch all weekend. I won't lie, my usual hunting trip usually does include a little snort of the good stuff (liquor in case people think I'm a druggie;)) at night to help me tell even more lies around the camp fire...but this time, I just wanted to hang out with mini-me. Know what I mean?

Right?
My dad wasn't a hunter, so I didn't get to experience that at all. I went for the first time when I was an adult, so it was different for me.
We're already planning another trip out before this season is over, and I know this is going to be one of those yearly things for him and I to do together. :goodjob:

Nah, like I said, the property belongs to a buddy of ours. He's owned it for 20+ yrs. Its bordered on both sides by a WMA and a private club, so there's plenty of breathing room for sure. Besides, it was only 4 of us there and two of them were minors so they both had to sit with my friend and I respectively. They sat in a blind and Daniel and I sat on a big rock on top of a ridge. Notice we all wore our orange even when we were just plinking. We don't take any chances, and even less when the kids are there.

Yeah, that's one of those "dad took me first" things. I did Baseball, Football, bike riding, motorcycle riding, and now Hunting. My brother-in-law took him fishing his first time, but that was only because he has a private lake on his property. It kinda ticked me off that I wasn't first at that, but he enjoyed it plus I've taken him several times since myself. :goodjob:

That's what it's all about, man. Good times, right?
Ha you were next to my county, Morgan County. Did y'all stop at the Wally World in Madison? I used to work at the (now closed) Chevy dealer there. Also, I fish out at Redlands all the time, basically grew up out that way on the lake. :goodjob:

Jaime,
Its great that you are doing that. My father has been taking me hunting since i was 8 or 9 when I use to live in Louisiana, and Texas. We go every year duck hunting in Mexico. Its our annual pilgrimage. My dad has been doing it for 20+years. Every time we go its a blessing, and develops memories that go with you for life.

Nah, we stopped at Wally world in Loganville on the way out. Redlands is the WMA I mentioned that borders my friend's property. Can't get a cell phone signal out there to save your life. :D

Good deal. Cell phonce reception does suck out there. I can't wait to have a son, so I can do this kind of stuff, and it mean something to me again. LOL
