For 23 years Rom Houben was trapped in his own body, unable to communicate with his doctors (http://www.guardian.co.uk/society/doctors) or family. They presumed he was in a vegetative state following a near-fatal car crash in 1983.

that is horrible, try staring at the wall for 20 mins, then think how it would be to do that for 23 years! but at least people know now

I wonder how many people throughout the years have known that their family pulled the plug on them? Being conscience and what-not. Wouldn't that be sad to know you were going to die very soon and you could hear everything around you and you know that you shouldn't be dying, you just can't tell anybody.

that's what went through my head when i read that at work, but at least technology is getting better each and every day. so they it will be easier for them to find this.
