To celebrate 25 years of the M5, BMW has created a one-off version of the E60 super saloon that Albert Biermann, head of BMW's M division calls, "the M5 CSL we never built."

The transformation began with a modified version of the standard M5's 5.0-liter V10, which has been stroked to 5.5-liters and fitted with a carbon fiber intake, secondary oil cooler and a new fascia. BMW remains mum on official power figures, but Biermann says the mods are good for around 580 hp and 400 lb.-ft. of torque over the standard 507 hp engine.

Mated to the modified mill is a fortified version of the seven-speed dual-clutch Getrag gearbox fitted to the current M3, while a carbon fiber roof joins a set of lightweight, carbon fiber seats up front. That, combined with the removal of the rear seats, sheds around 110 pounds from the M5's curb weight.

Although performance stats haven't been released, BMW says the M5 CSL laps the Nurburgring around 20 seconds faster than the standard model, so something around the 7:50 mark isn't out of the question. What is out of the question is the opportunity to buy the CSL. BMW has no plans to offer it to the public, and to that we say... fine. We'll wait for the twin-turbocharged V8 version coming in 2011.

As cool as that is, I'm not disappointed at all that it will never be built for the public.

I know what you mean because its not that much that was done.

I'd been kinda nice to have BMW return the CSL line up. I'd just prefer there to be a bit more to differentiate the regular M5 (and M3) from the CSL version.

If you also remember the 1 Series Tii concept, BMW is rumored to have a 3 series Tii by around 2012.

I agree, besides the power boost, it only dropped 100 pounds. You could drop that by getting an asian driver!

Now that I'm used to the 1 series, the tii concept is alot more attractive than when they released. I am glad to see BMW making more motorsport efforts in their newer cars.

I am interested to see what they do with the e92 chassis.

The specs sound good, but that car pictured is balls to the wall ugly... heh. I would love to see them put more M into some of their cars and stop trying to put so much into SUVs. Yes, I realize that there is a lot of money in doing that in North America, but it still doesn't make it right. There are no plans for an M version of the new Z car, but we have an M for the X5 and X6? Anyone else see a discrepancy?

I get that its the original CSL paintjob but that is really ugly.

Agreed.

There is more than one way to do it so they had other options.

He's listed as owning an E46 M3 so perhaps he has the thought process of "i paid for this M3, but BMW makes a much more expensive version that gets me too little of a result."

But that's just my presumption.

Omitting the fact that it's the M5's bday, I think they did this just to prove that with minor updates on their old chassis, they could whoop the competition (Panamera Turbo, CTS-V) quite easily . If this was in fact a CSL I believe they would've gone farther with the weight savings other than just gut the car and drop some seats in. Afterall, seats alone on a BMW will save you 100-160lbs. I realize that the DCT transmission alone probably adds 50-80lbs like it does in the M3 but a real CSL will go a step beyond when it comes to weight savings (roofs, doors, no A/C, no radio, carboard drunk floors etc) and I see no mention of this here.

I do think they are dumb for not doing a CSL M6. There is a market for a 3400lb, 550hp 7:40 ring beast (+ or -) M6, even if it does cost 140k.

I have an E46 M3 with $50K+ in track parts on it, not one is a CSL part ;)

I design parts for many OE manufacturers (including BMW) and caould have a reals CSL here in the US at the snap of a finger. :goodjob:

The fat man looks horrified and the driver looks like he's 10.

Perhaps that's why the fat man is scared, the other guy can't see over the wheel.

I got to run a new M6 down the Bahn a few years back when they came out. Those BMW Engineers are hard to scare. :D

I like it in theory but 110lbs lost is nothing...the car weighs over 4000 lbs....thats a small woman or a large kid...
