I just read an article on the LFA in car and driver, and I know this car is all the rage and everyone talks about it, but I have to stop to discuss the heart of this beast. The engine.

I would have to say, that this engine is probably (and arguably) one of the best road-going production engines of all time.

The 4.8L V10 revs from its idle to its 9,000 RPM redline in just 0.6 seconds!. Toyota had to use digital instrumentation because an analogue tachometer cannot sweep the mass of the needle fast enough to keep up with the engine, while remaining accurate. Toyota worked with Yamaha's motorcycle team to put superior high RPM motorcycle inspired valve-trains on the V10. They also worked with Toyota's F-1 team to get the engine to produce an F-1 like sound on the road car. The intake features 10 individual throttle bodies inside of a carbon resonating box, and the box has a few thin channels going near the cabin so the driver and passengers can enjoy the 10 ITBs. The car utilizes an acoustically tuned exhaust featuring complex resonating and expansion chambers, the engine has forged internals, and passes Emissions in Japan, Europe, America(even California) all while making 560bhp! This thing is a beast. Sorry if you're tired of hearing about the LFA, but I felt the engine deserved a good bit of highlighting. Quite spectacular indeed.

I mean just listen to the sound!

Probably the most technologically impressive car I've ever read about.

Kudos to Toyota, lets hope some can trickle down to the FT-86.

Lol the R35 also costs about 1/4 the price of this beast lol. This is a true Ferrari competator. (Price estimated in the $300,000 + range) :(

^^ yep, the NSX was the last car that had Italy rethinking on how they were going to build their cars a bit better.

Nice thread....the car is just incredible....below is a very cool vid of the carbon fiber weaving....only 2 of those machines are here in the world

VIDEO: Weaving the Lexus LFA's carbon fiber A-pillar is mesmerizing
http://www.autoblog.com/2009/10/29/video-weaving-the-lexus-lfas-carbon-fiber-a-pillar/

Three air-cooled heat exchangers and a 10-liter remote oil reservoir handle both cooling and lubrication duties for the dry-sump V10, which is shorter and narrower than Toyota's own 3.5-liter V6. With weight distribution of paramount importance, the engine sits behind the strut towers and rests so deep that the valve covers actually sit below the tops of the tires. Because of its low placement and the rear-mounted six-speed sequential gearbox, Toyota developed an offset gear mounted to the crank that sends power to the transmission through a torque tube – a world's first. All of this results in a 48/52 front-to-rear weight distribution and a center of gravity that sits just behind the steering wheel. You're practically sitting on top of it, so the LFA pivots around your hips rather than being anchored up front – nearly negating the mid-engine argument.

Anyways, here is a great engine bay shot, I love the beautifully detailed carbon fiber that is not covered up and is displayed anytime you open the hood :).

They should have called this thing the Lexus FTW. It may not be the fastest supercar or the cheapest, BUT ill bet you could drive it every day without worrying about it falling apart or breaking down and it wont need an arm and a leg in maintenance all the time.
Here is a pretty cool vid incase you havent seen it...... (it sounds INCREDIBLE)

-long very informative post-

Yeah, I love that carbon weaving technology! Also, I can attest for having a low and rearward center of gravity, the Rx-7 is known for the same handling characteristics because our tiny engines travel into our transmission tunnels a little bit haha. The more I read about the LFA, the more I appreciate it's engineering. This is quite revolutionary stuff. It's like everything good you read about, put into one "no compromise" car. I LOVE it!

Have you seen Ferrari's 458 Italia that is replacing the F430? Their V-8 is producing 570HP. This will be entry level for them, so I doubt Ferrari will be running from anyone.

Well the Italia's "entry level" MSRP is 300K.... and it makes a whopin 10hp more! Lexus is cooler imo for now.

It is cooler than the italia. Plus this car was born only to compete at the track. I've just read the long informative article in "Road & Track" and this car is amazing.

As much of a Ferrari fan boy as I am.....and I am a huge one, I have the tattoo to prove it. If I were in the market for a $300k hyper car. the Lexus would be it. It is perfect.

This car may finally put Lexus in the 'performance' category.... and let people take cars like the IS-F more seriously....

Now time to start saving for $350.000..... long way to go.. :)

say hello to the Supra for the 21st century.

Not really, I was expecting this to be that until just recently as I learned about it. If it was a 21st century Supra, it'd be more like the corvette Zr-1 and Nissan GTR in terms of pricing and features, this is WAAYY above the Supra, and before this, the Supra was Toyota's sportiest car. R&T claims that this car took over 10 years to develop because the chief project leader wanted to go into supercars, and therefore really had no previous data to put into a car, and I quote "only having the Supra made before". So this is nothing like a Supra. It has no historical cars linked to it, and its all fresh all new, and completely better.

Supra means "above all" in latin. So you tell me. Early codenames for the LFA were "Supra" as well. Its been referred to for years as the next Supra, granted its well above what the Supra ever was, but the Supra was the top in its day from Toyota, and this continues that legacy, just minus a name.
