1911 Rail install

Ok well here is my first attempt installing a rail and my first attempt silver soldering. As you can see from the final picture its not 100% yet, but its getting close. I still need to do a little more clean up.

For those of you who may be wondering, this is the same gun from another thread i started a couple months ago. Its time for phase 2 of my "build". The rail is just one part of my plans for "phase 2". Let me know what you guys think, anything that jumps out as ugly please let me know, and ill try and fix it. And yes, i dont really know what i am doing, i am just trying to have fun a learn something new :D

1. Holes drilled and tapped. Frame to rail fit is being modified to bring the gaps down.

2. Screws stickin up, file those puppies down and sand smooooth.

3. Sanded smooth, off to the blast cabinet we go

4. This shot shows the rail mounted while getting blasted. I took them apart and blasted them clean before silver soldering (like everything else, i have no idea if thats the "correct" way of doing things)

5. Dirty and cooling off. Wiped clean (kinda) then off to the blaster again.

6. Fresh out of the blaster, not so pretty. I broke the files and sandpaper out and went to town flying my the seat of my pants.

7. After some filing and sanding this is what i came up with. Off to the blaster i go again.

8. Fresh out of the blast cabinet. This is where i stopped tonight. Like i previously said its by no means perfect/done but IMO its well on its way. Just a little more time with the files and i hope to be done.

That shit looks good. Can't wait to see phase 2 finished. I'll be buying myself a 1911 for my 21st... been looking at the Kimbers, any opinion on them?

I am not a big fan of kimbers, although they do manage to keep ALOT of people happy so that must mean somthing.

it really comes down to budget. Take a look at springfields. I see thier loaded models pop up all the time on the local forums for good prices.

I'm really looking to buy new... Springfield is definitely an option, I have an XD .45 now and LOVE it... The only 1911's I've really had any experience with are my buddies Taurus, and his brothers Kimber... I'll definitely be looking on some local forums and stuff at opinions soon.

Looks good danny. Did you use any thread locker on the screws? Are you plannin on staking them at all?

If you pick up some vaseline or some di-electric grease it will help with cleaning up any of the silver solder.

I have never done one of these installs but it looks good!

the silver went behind the rail and locked the screws in place. at least as far as i can tell lol.

my only concern is how cerakote is going to work on all the small gaps around the screw heads. Any ideas?

I will be parkerizing then cerakoting.

Went and checked the screws tonight. They were held in by a a little solder, decided to back them out out to clean. This way i can park and cerakote them seperatly, i think the end result will be better. Final install i will apply some red loctite and call it done, and think this should suffice.

I may bust the solder out again, i got looking at it tonight. One side doesnt look as good as the other, i think i filed too much away. I did a little more clean up tonight, have a little bit more to go.

Also started fitting a new trigger. Going to try out a short trigger and see how i like it. Nother week or two and its off to Dave Erickson for checkering and sight cuts.

cylinder and slide short trigger, EGW ejector and extractor, and heinie rear sight came in and fitting has begun. Gun is off to Dave Erickson for sight cuts and checkering today (i hope), should be back in my hands on tuesday. talk about amazing turn around time.

If youre still doing this i am down to bring my slide,barrel and various small parts off my beat up pt92. can the barrel even be done? not the rifleing just the outside.

ya the bbl can be done, but you gotta buy plugs for that caliber. Not sure what a PT 92 is off hand, but im limited to doing handguns this go around due to thier size.

Also if you do wanna come down thats cool. But i cant promise good results obviously, as the process is science based by nature.

We need to bead blast your parts, and degrease them thoroughly before the park process. Make sure the parts are nice and clean before they come down.

At the moment i am shooting for parkerizing next weekend.

edit- just saw your thread on the pt92, way cool. I would do all the parts, frame included if i was you. If you jsut park some of the parts chances are they will have a different shade of black than the original finish. Parkerizing by nature seems to have variations in color (in my micro amount of experience lol), just as a heads up. Also, make sure you detail strip it before you bring it down, each part has to be done separately.

Unfortunately the frame is aluminum:-( After the slide and other parts were parked i was going to do a duracote in black or mabey even tan.

I have sniper gray and carbon black colors.

Help me split the costs a little on this stuff and you more than welcome to come play on refinishing day lol.

also. Black anodizing is pretty sweet for aluminum. But you will have to drop this off at one of the local shops that does it.

Are glock slides stainless?

Bead blasted steel is just a nice flat silver color.

Still shooting to parkerize on the 14th, but may end up doing it on the 21st.

I am contemplating doing an OD green frame with graphite black everything else.

thanks man. Been working on cleaning up the front strap above the checkering today, got that mostly knocked out. Just finished flushing up the new ejector with the slide. Now i have to cut and tune the ejector, tune the extractor, and finish cleaning up the front strap and I think ill be ready for parkerizing (tomorrow i hope). Now i will have a spare ejector and extractor, both blended to the slide and tuned.

How those mags workin out for ya?

ps. the gun got the "ok" from Dave Erickson (nationally know smith for 1911s) this week. It was out there for checkering, and sight cuts (see that sexy new rear sight). He had a few comments about the gun that I am working on addressing (nothing safety or reliability wise). So that was good news.

Fit EGW oversize ejector and extractor, tuned both (will still need to field test the tune)
Finished up front strap (best i could at least)
Blasted and degreased
Parkerized

Still left to do:
cerakote
install sights
field test and tune

temp front sight. Custom front sight should be back from trijicon next week (i hope). New rear sight on. I want to go test fire tomorrow and make sure the new extractor and ejector are good to go before cerakoting.

Picked up a 10 round mag, going to test it out and see how i like it. As of tonight still sporting the tan grips for somereason, probably back to black soon.
