Nope not Jet.
This is a rocket. Rockets are banned by the NHRA.
This ones my favorite. Vanishing Point. 30,000 HP and goes through 30 liters of hydrogen peroxide per second.

For thoes of you that dont know the diff between a rocket and a jet.A jet engine sucks in oxygen from an external oxygen source(Air) and combusts it with fuel carried in a tank. A rocket engine carries both fuel and oxygen in separate supply tanks and does not require an external oxygen source.

John Shepherd is the current AWD record holder. I had the priveledge of sitting next to him in New York in 06. My car was hurt so I tripped the beams for points and watched him thunder down the quarter mile. Here is one of his timeslips(right lane)

And if you look at the ticket, you will realize the importance of leaving on time. John lost to a slower car due to the "hole shot".

I would assume because it is essentially a bomb going down the track.

Rockets are not like jets, once they are fired up that is it, the thing goes till it runs out of gas or explodes, too many factors in there for danger.

i copied this straight off of youtube:
Apparently the reason these cars are not running any more is because the tracks cannot get public liability insurance to allow them to run. The G-Forces applied to the driver were causing them to lose consciousness. Vanishing Point did have an issue with obtaining 90% Hydrogen Peroxide fuel but I believe it was overcome. Tragically Sammy Miller was killed a few years ago in a workplace accident. He was a super guy and the real driving force behind the rocket cars at Santa Pod,UK. RIP Sammy.

The difference is that John originally built that car for under $10K and used to drive it to work (yes, I knew him). Hell, I had seen that car out in 12 inches of snow before.

You are thinking of solid rockets specifically. Liquid fueled rockets, like the ones used in all the drag cars I've ever seen, can be turned off at any time, simply shut off the fuel like any other combustion device. That's why they use them, would be pretty dumb to use something you can't shut off.
