View Full Version : Mugen’s Ultimate Civic comes to UK; £38,599 ($64,000 to us)

After huge interest from the UK and overseas, Mugen has announced it will hand-build up to 20 of its road-legal race cars. The famous tuner of Honda engines will produce the cars at its Northampton base, where customers will meet the Mugen engineers and customise their car to suit their personal needs.

As engine tuning is Mugen’s speciality you would also expect a special engine too. And there is one. A 2 litre i-VTEC engine with new camshafts and a modified intake system to give a power increase of 20% to 236bhp and a 10% boost to torque. The extra power is put onto the road with a limited slip diff, and the handling has also been revised with new springs and a completely new set-up.
http://photos.evo.co.uk/images/front_picture_library_UK/dir_678/car_photo_339262_7.jpg
The car is also being offered with a ‘Track Pack’ which includes front Recaro seats, removal of the rear seat bench, road-legal track tyres, water and oil gauges and data recording equipment.

Mugen has set the price of the Civic Type R at £38,599 and insists this price includes an ‘unparalleled purchasing experience’ where the package will be tailored to the individual customers, supposedly similar to a race car build. Mugen will also paint every car in Honda’s championship white, as a celebration of Honda and Mugen’s racing history.

‘When we launched the Civic Type RR saloon in Japan, we sold out of all 300 units in just six minutes,’ says Hiroki Toyoda VP, of Mugen Euro.

People that are paying this kind of money for a race-prepped civic don't care that you can get a used NSX for $60,000. Its not like they can only buy one car, and they chose this. This is just a toy.

And it isn't news that a 996 can outperform a Civic. You are buying the experience, and for 20 people out of the 6.5 billion on Earth, its worth it.

While the above might be true, its just hard for me to understand why out of all the cars(in that price range) you could pick up as a week end play toy, they pick this civic. IMO it kinda seems to be the LEAST "bang for your buck"

It seems like you could buy an SI and spend the remainder on upgrades and have it out preforms this and still have money left over.:2cents:

Not really that hard to understand. I spent $18,000 on a Honda Fit. For that price I could have had a used Evo, 350z, Civic Si, M3, Corvette, etc. Or I could have bought a EK hatch for $3,000 and dropped $15,000 in upgrade parts.

Honda has sold over 2,000,000 Fits around the world.

Mugen has to sell 20 of these. :dunno:

You spent 18k on a on a 4 door econamy car that was new or newish (depending on when you bought it) that is understandable, you drive yours car everyday and I asume you dont race yours and even if you do your getting your your moneys worth on that car because of the amout you use it.

So why spend 64k on economy car that your only going to use as a toy. like I said before it seems to be the least bang for your buck. To me it seems if your going to buy a car to play around with, make it worth it, And to me this car just doesnt seem worth it.

People who buy these aren't looking for bang for their buck. They are die-hard Honda enthusiasts who have money to burn. Its all relative. I bought the Fit because it was the newest Honda and I thought it looked cool and handled well (and because I couldn't afford an SI at the time). People paid $30,000 for the USDM Mugen Civic for the same reason, and they sold 500 of those. People bought the NSX-R GT for $450,000, and it was basically a stock NSX-R with a body kit and a non-functional scoop.

If I was a betting man, I'm sure that Mugen already knows exactly who these are going to, and those people knew how much it was going to be long before we did. So Mugen makes some special civics for some big spenders and gets ricers all around the world to talk about how crazy it is. And maybe, one or two of said ricers is so impressed, they go and buy a shift knob or a reservoir cover. Boom.

My thoughts exactly. People who can afford that shit could care less about the supra, nsx, and FD that you bought with your 60k. By the end of the day, they have a collector's car.

Personally, I wouldn't pay over 30k for a 4cyl n/a car but there are tons of people who would. Take the lotus elise for example, you can take a Toyota MRS, swap a 2zz in that bitch, suspension mod and BAM! equivalent bang for less buck. Exige? Throw a snail on that 2zz. But by the end of the day, the elise owner has an elise and you have a mrs with a 2zz.

And to all the fuckers saying "Oh fuck no, $30k+ for a honda?!?" If they slap an acura badge on that bitch, I'm sure youd be more willing to shell out $30k. i.e. your jdm tight "honda integra dc5" and your "honda accord euro r".

Disagree. This is an attempt to market the Mugen brand in Britain with a Civic that is made nationally. Mugen's input into it was rather limited as most of the work went into the engine bay. This Mugen Civic would be outperformed by the Renault Megane R26 pretty substantially. Even though the Renault is also fwd and NA, it is a much more complete package. The Civic just gives you a better engine.

You say buy it for the experience, and i would agree if this was the Japanese Mugen RR which along with the standard FD2 Civic Type R is the best 4 door fwd chassis in the world and a great drivers car. But, this package would just make you feel that a bunch of effort went into fixing a car that was poor from the beginning. Honda has admitted the torsion beam on the back was a mistake and rightfully so.

In this situation, this is not a drivers car and the money is paying for a Mugen badge. Not a Mugen effort.

The Mugen RR from Japan was a whole different beast. Badass track car from the box.
Plus, we have to remember that the american dollar is shit compared to the euro.... it is "less expensive" for them over there.

The reason this thread is getting action is because a car dressed up to look like something it isn't wont make sense for that much money.

VooDooXII
10-27-2009, 06:26 PM
I like the idea of a road-legal race car...but the price is exorbitant. Limited production is the only reason it's so high.

Look at the Porsche 911 GT3. It's about $115,000 whereas a Carrera S is about $90,000. That's a $25,000 price difference, or a 30% premium.

Compared to a normal Civic Si which is about $25,000...this one should cost $32,500, or about the price of the Mugen Si.

Again, this ridiculous price just reflects the collector status of this car...and even in that regard, I still don't see the point for the same reason everyone else states; It's a Civic.

I respect the car and I'm sure it's a blast to drive. I wonder how quick it actually is. I'm also curious as to why there hasn't been a stripped-out "track pack" for the standard SI, sort of like the RS treatment on the Lancer Evolution.

As for the price, what do you expect for a car that's custom tailored for each customer. It's kinda like comparing a off the shelf suit to a custom made suit. (Oh yeah, before someone start bashing me for being a "Civic Lover" I don't care for the price myself LOL)

People keep missing the big point and i think it is because so many people on here are straight line minded.

The engine is fine. The chassis is the missing piece. It is terrible.

The price is a secondary issue and the Mugen badge is why most on here like it. Mugen helped in the power department but it didn't fix the chassis. It is the same thing affecting the Vauxhall Astra VXR. Enormous power and torque pushing a chassis made of iron girders.

I used to have a Civic so me making fun of Civic owners is a bit of a pun.

LOL Honda had to go back and beef up that Civic, since TopGear said they liked the other Civic Si better than this one and proved it to perform just as good (if not better?) than this one.

Imma step up and say that I would rock it if I had cash to blow. I'd drive it for 3k miles, then store it and sell it for a lot more in 30 years to some Japanese collector.

I don't think too many americans will drop that kinda cash for a honda, but still it's nice of them to finally offer those cars down here.

Your math needs to be (10^300)^1000

$64K to the US??? For 236HP??? Are they f***ing nuts.. It is a CIVIC. For $64K you could buy a beautiful, used of course, 911 or older 911 turbo Porsche, BMW M3, Audi S4, Audi S5 maybe, and SEVERAL other beautiful REAL sports cars/sedans. Listen I like Hondas and all, but if they are serious with $64K for a 234HP Civic I have to question their mental health. Even the original Mugen Civic was over priced at $31.5K, which was the price of the blue one they had at the Honda dealership here in knoxville. I mean do you realize what kind of car you could build for that price. Not to mention the fact that Hondas arent nortoriously known for great handling cars which is kinda a deal breaker for me anyways.

Oh well, end rant lol. That rediculous and it doesnt even look good either
