View Full Version : Question for my Mexican peeps.

This is a serious question and I know I will get some BS in here, but I don't know where else to put this. Anyways, I have a school project on making Vodka for Hispanics. We decided to focus on Mexicans since they are the largest and fastest growing group of Hispanics in the US currently.

So, my question is: What is the Party of the Virgin Mary called in Spanish? Is it: Fiesta de la Mercè

After we answer that: What is the party all about (why do you celebrate it)? What goes on there? What day is it on?

Add anything else you think I might find interesting. I found out about the party from my Mexican friends next door to the shop, but he just called it La Fiesta de la Virgin Mary. I can't find that online. He said it was the biggest party celebrated by Mexicans, is this true?

My wife has never heard of this party either, hence she has never had to cook for it. But if there is another occasion she needs to cook in 8lb 7oz baby Jesus name, I need to know about it ASAP.

My friend at the store said this party and he also said that Cinco De Mayo is bigger here than in Mexico—so that is not it.

I found this: http://www.tomzap.com/holiday.html and on Aug 15th it says something about it, but not sure it's the same thing.

Either way, I am just trying to find out the biggest party holiday for Mexicans.

El Dia de los Muertos is the biggest.Troo dat. My wife was telling me the biggest day "nationwide" holiday in Mexico is the Day of the Dead. Means nothing here really. But Nov 1st. is a big ass F-ing party for the dead there.

Cinco De Mayo is second (only because of the tourists) and Christmas is third.

Yeah, all of my friends say that cinco de mayo is more or less a US thing, that its not really celebrated in mexico.

If I am right, and I could be wrong, but with Mexicans the deceased is a big deal to them. They are celebrated and parades are had where they dress up in costumes (our Halloween) and visit loved ones graves.

For those few days, the dead are allowed to come back and speak with the living, but only if you are drunk enough. Yea.. It's a big deal.

Only thing I know about the Virgin Mary and a "party" - is the celebration that hispanics with a catholic background celebrate in December. I think it lasts a week. People pray to her, while making some bomb ass mexican food in the process. Before my parents "converted" to christianity they would celebrate this shit. From what I remember there wasn't any alcohol involved.

So, to answer your retarded ass questions:

After we answer that: What is the party all about (why do you celebrate it)? What goes on there? What day is it on?

1. People eat, and celebrate Mary's role in the whole giving birth to Jesus 'n shit. How she was a virgin, and gave birth to a dude who walked on water and cured the blind.

2. Mary's birthday is on the 12th of December so I think this shit goes down from the 5th-12th of December. I THINK!

Virgin Maria Auxilatrix...celebrated on may 24th by catholics.

in colombia she's known as "the virgin of assassins." i'd assume anyone who perceives her as an assassin, would be the ones who'd praise her with alcohol.
