What would you say to a 7lbs. complete exhaust system. :goodjob:
Well... we got it. On our Single Slam Integra.
We currently have a full aluminum Downpipe back exhaust with a light stainless steel downpipe, but we couldnt find alot of options for an aluminum muffler. So we decided today that we would fabricate one, being that some event classes require a muffler and exhaust system. So this is perfect for event legality and weight reduction.
We had a 4 inch canister (:ninja:) laying around the shop and decided to use it for the body of the muffler. It is fully resonated and there is sound deadening used around the wall of the canister to add extra sound absorbance. 2lb. DP + 3lb. piping + 2lb. muffler = 7lbs. complete.
We are mounting it Saturday and are testing it Sunday at IFO.
Tell us what you think. ;)

I cant wait to see how it sounds. Should be a little quieter since it is actually a functioning unit. Thanks to QWK D16 for getting stuff cut up and perforating the inner pipe so we could get that piece welded up.

c'mon guys....my camera is laying on the desk in the office :D

looks much better than i first anticipated....ya'll had me confused yesterday, i thought Justin was honing in his plasma skills or something, lol....

the cool thing is with a muffler this brings the total exhaust weight of the dp back section to around 7lbs max....and it functions

when the original went on we saved just over 30lbs of weight...with the muffler setup we're looking at a weight savings of around 28+ lbs :goodjob:

$450-500 range, header back, no cat/muffler, for most cars

the muffler portion is a new addition that will require testing before we begin to offer it, when we originally did the aluminum exhaust the car picked up 3psi by changing the exhaust only, not to mention the weight difference

Thats cool but get ready to re weld it...because its going to break. Aluminum just won't put up with the vibrations long term. Its to stiff a material and it gets weak around the welds.

i'm not saying it won't happen....it may, but the welds were properly prepped and laid, we don't expect it to have anymore problems than you would see out of SS, etc

Its not the weld that you should be worried about, its the material its welded to. Its going to crack right at the weld. Aluminum just isn't a good exhaust material. Its cool and its loud as hell because it resonates, but it just doesn't have the right mechanical properties. If you want to do something trick build it out of Inconel or some really thin stainless. I'm not trying to slam you I'm just warning you every aluminum exhaust I have ever seen has cracked.

I just came in from prepping the car for IFO and getting everything ready. I weighed the dp back, which includes the muffler and it weighed 5 lbs. Previously just piping it was 3.5 lbs. It does sound toned down at idle a little. I understand the concerns of the al breaking, but it is properly designed with supports in the correct location to hold it stress free. The engine mounts are stiff enough that it doesnt move much. I built this exhaust to see how reliable it can be. The tone was muffled from the exhaust to the point that I had a few people tell me it sounded like it was under water, haha. It should hold up and there are no visible stress cracks that I found today when I dropped it to weld it.

Just saw this. We do have some local machine shops that bring their aluminum heads to us when they have issues from corrosion, cracks and other things for me to weld up for them. Thanks.

I'm interested to hear it, because the straight through design that was on there wasn't very loud to begin with.

It may not be that much more quiet, but it will pass for a muffled exhaust system, for competitions. BUT we might design a resonator closer to the middle of the system where the sound needs to be captured. And next will be designing it in sections, with unboltable pieces for servicing/removal.

Just to clarify, and please correct me if im wrong. But wouldn't this only give significant gain to a drag car, or a car thats mainly going straight? Because I thought the idea was to have a lower center of gravity when turning. And the exhaust is about as low as you can get. I understand it will help with heat and what not.

oh and I know its on a drag car, I was just thinking about if it makes it to production.

Not sure, but I wouldnt want 40 lbs of exhaust tryin to sway side to side under my car. A lower center of gravity and wider stance doesnt really include exhaust, just suspension and steering components. But I understand what you mean. :goodjob:

Big Baller

A lower center of gravity includes everything, but you never add weight to get a better center of gravity.

I will be doing a sunroof delete over the winter so that should help equal everything out being that it is pretty high up. Lower overall weight would help a road course car by helping acceleration out of the corner and reducing braking distance also. I do agree that a lower center of gravity helps turning stability.

Yeah I'm hoping to pick up a cheap DD next summer so i can go all out with the prelude. They make a CF sunroof plug that saves like 20lbs after removing the track and steel sunroof. at only $300, im very tempted.
