Problem with brakes

While the car is standing and it's turned on and I'm pressing the brake, it slowly goes in until it reaches the very bottom, so basically it loosens and isn't stiff like it's supposed to be. No oil is dripping or anything. The car is a 2000 Ford Ranger, 6 cyl. I have a feeling its the master cylinder but could it be something else?

Yeah try bleeding the brakes, same symptoms as my friends Z31, we bled em, now they work great.

yep, bleed the system first. Alot of time people neglect to use new fluid for the whole system. I usually, push all new fluid every year or two. Takes 2 or 3 bottles but it's just like factory new.

bleed the lines check all calipers for leaks if ever is ok and the problem is still there bad master cylinder.

I bled the brakes, and checked for leaking fluid and it's still the same. Could be the air like goi_ek said but I can't figure out where.

Do you hear a hissing noise when you press the brakes? You may have to replace the booster with the master cylinder also. Brake fluid leaking into the booster will make it go bad.

Def sounds like your master cylinder. Sometimes they leak internally past the piston seal causing these exact symptoms without leaking externally.

Sounds like the fluid is bypassing the seals in the Master Cylinder. You can buy a rebuild kit at any auto parts house and change out the seals. If you do this you will need to remove the Msrt Cyl from the firewall and rebleed the system when you put it all back together. It should just be a split ring that holds the MC piston in. Pull the ring and the piston should pop right out. Change the orings and put it back together.

A new MC is prolly less than 40 bucks. Then you have less chance of messing something up. :goodjob: Just sayin.

I bought a new Master Cylinder and a new Power Brake Booster, it cost me $150 all together so I just bought them both, should be changing both of them this weekend, wish me luck :P
