considering purchasing a bike by early 2006

wussup folks. i'm mostly whoring it up or chilling in other parts of IA.COM, but i have a sincere question about bikes. i've loved vehicles for a very longtime(cars,trucks, you name it) and i've owned different types of vehicles...except a bike.
last year i went scouting aroud for bikes cause i've been wanting to get one for some time now. my previous experience with bikes is minimal, at best. my dad rode a honda goldwing for some time while i was growing up, i rode his alone briefly during that time. it's been about 10 years since i've rode one but now i'm ready to take the plunge.

physique: i'm about 5'11'' weight 217lbs. solid.

this is my question. i've looked around and talked with owners and dealers alike concerning my serious interest in purchasing a bike, and with what size(cc) i should start with. those that i've talked to, look at my build(why?) and told me a 750cc would be a great start. others, looking at the fact that this will be technically my first bike say 600cc. how does build possibly dictate what cc bike one will purchase? any or none.....

Get a beater to start. If you drop it, it wopn't hurt your wallet so much. Spend money initially on gear. Don't go too cheap on the gear either. I would not suggest a new bike for your first bike. Go ahead and get it now, and then later (maybe next year), you can get a 750 if you want to. Personally, even though I ride an R1, I suggest to look for a lightweight 600. The weight makes all the difference when it comes to fatigue.

i recall when i went and sat on a honda cbr6 and raised the kickstand, i didnt feel too comfortable with it 'cause it felt like i was gonna fall over the front of the handle bars(maybe the rear was high) like the front end was lower than the back, if in a braking situation. i sat on a 750cc bike(forgot the manu/model) but it felt level. which put me at ease.

the salesman said something about me having a longer lowerbody and shorter torso. i thought that was odd. i would like to grab and Yamaha r6. cause that one actually felt better than a CBR6 and i'm not even gonna pick up a 900cc anything till acouple years down the line. once i get some mileage/experience under my belt.

Sooooo, dont listen to sales people:) their main concern is getting you into a bike, your about the same size as me, (5'10" and 215), my first bike was a Ninja 250r... after a few months of riding almost everyday. i got a great deal and upped to a 99 gsxr600... its scary hopping on something like that. Ive never before AND since been scared of a vehicle that fast

biggest thing is, get whats comfy for you.. and altho a smaller bike is great to start... a bike's speed = amount of throttle you give it, all you have to worry about other than that is all the cagers who arent watching where they are going, which happens about every 3rd day ya ride heh.

yea a ninja 250 is a good start for a first timer, but most people grow out it it really quickly, as did I.

If you are not comfortable riding yet, get a 500 or a v twin 650. those are great bikes to start out on also.
if you are set on a 750, there is one for sale on georgiasportbike.com it is a 89 katana 750 for 1500 OBO. great beater to learn on and now worry about dropping.
