Your trade-in vehicle must:

have been manufactured less than 25 years before the date you trade it in and, in the case of a category 3 vehicle, must also have been manufactured not later than model year 2001
have a "new" combined city/highway fuel economy of 18 miles per gallon or less
be in drivable condition
be continuously insured and registered to the same owner for the full year preceding the trade-in

Dealerships effed up.

Or just went ahead and made the deal, knowing it might not work out. If the deal was contingent on that trade-in, they may have just factored the $3k-$4k into the final price.

The dumbest fn way ever to buy a new car. They could have sold all those cars at auction and owed china less money, not to mention all the little dealerships and junkyards could be making money off them. It coulda been a win win for the economy but instead it was a quick way to sucker people into buying a new car so they can roll out new models and end of the year sales and all the tools can think wow, the govt helped me get a new car, I love them. Good luck finding a decent priced used car now, or used parts from a junk yard.

Not true. 2 different places wouldnt accept our 94 Pontiac Bonneville because it gets like 22mpg with mixed driving. They said the MPG that was rated by the EPA is the number they go by and it had to be <18mpg

I understand some people are oblivious to what they are driving. But I damn sure doubt that someone has insurance for over a year or be driving it regularly. GM electronics back in the 80's aren't that perfect if no one takes care of it. And I believe this government clunkers for cash for clunkers isn't going to last not much longer...

I don't get why anyone would crush these cars, it makes no logical since. So for $4,500 + some weak trade in $'s i'm going to crush my $100,000+ GNX. Our family friend has a GNX and I don't think there is an owner out there that isn't aware of its value. Maybe they were traded to cash for clunker dealerships and not destroyed? Maybe they got so much money for them that they didn't care if they were crushed? Did the government really give a dealership 100K so they could crush a GNX? I need more pics of these thing destroyed to believe they truly were destroyed because that DB7 picture is a FAKE

Exactly, I need some proof! I believe some of this is more of a hoax (especially the GNX and Typhoon, don't care for the other cars). People working at any dealership should know what the hell a GNX is, the value etc.

I'm willing to guess that these cars have histories... like major crashes causing frame damage, flood damage, etc etc. for cars with bad histories that require expensive rapair its probably better to take the $4500 credit.

Say you're 8-series or your LaForza gets into a major crash... its pretty much worthless after that... they're just aren't repair parts around for these rare vehicles. And most of the people who own such vehicles aren't the types who can be bothered finding someone who will give them more than $4500 for their now worthless vehicle.

Not to mention that these exotics are plagued with electrical problems and crap anyway.

I know of a place that has had an 8 series sitting on the lot for 2 years with 12k on the window. If he wants 12k then the wholesale price he payed would be closer to 6. So its not like $4500 on a beat-down 8 series was that big of a loss...

How about the 250-300 mk3 supras they crushed. Stupid ass government.

A flawless MkIII Supra is worth maybe $3500 in a private party sale on a good day, about half that at wholesale. And its not like they are rare.

A friend of mine sent running/driving MkIII Supra to the crusher because the 7MGTE had a knocking rod and the interior was trashed. He tried to sell it for the low low price of $500 for over a year and no one wanted it.

But if you look at the BMW list a 1991 E30 BMW M3 got traded in cash for clunkers.. These things are rare.. just a shell for one of these things sell for over $4k in some cases.. and cash for clunkers requires the cars to run.

I am pretty sure they don't require much else other than the cars run a couple laps around the parking lot to make sure they are drivable. For all we know someone could have taken the M3 badge and VIN off of a real wrecked M3 and affixed them to re plain Jane 318 or whatever.

I am sure a lot of these "exotic" vehicles either had major problems or were just hard for their owners to sell so they took a loss on them as a trade in. Its the owners' choice what to do with their vehicles anyway.

But I guess if I ever end up with a E30 M3 with frame damage and knocking rods I can just sell it for top dollar on IA as theres obviously a bustling market for such vehicles and buyers lined up around the block with $$$ in hand.

Nerdsrock22
10-20-2009, 06:20 PM
I saw a video of the Maserati that got crushed. It had 18,000 miles and they guy had been trying to sell it for a long time.

Everyone says they would drop 4 grand on an exotic car, but folks that actually have that kinda money in disposable cash don't blow it on crappy cars.

This is definitely true. $4500 will buy you a 20 year old BMW "supercar" in shitty condition, or it will buy you a newer run of the mill model in much better condition.

If owning an exotic car was as easy as finding the first 20+ year old beater with a low price, everyone on IA would be in 8 Series' and NSX's

I understand some of the cars. I owned a Laforza, I know what it's like to find parts on it. I would have traded that in for cash for clunkers for sure and come out ahead on that deal. But some of the others, I don't believe.

Yes, I doubly don't believe it coming from the US Government. Anyone doubting that....obviously hasn't worked for the US Government. When you do, then you will understand that 50% of the information that comes from them is incorrect, 20% is fabricated and 30% is true.

Especially in a program, which was proven to work so well they extended it. It was the shining beacon of prosperity and the cannon call of how well the government was working during the recession.
