I have a friend who likes to call the internal combustion device that powers our cars as 'motors' and it's getting pretty annoying.


An engine is a mechanical device that produces some form of output from a given input. When the purpose of an engine is to produce mechanical power from a fuel source (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fuel) it is referred to as a prime mover (http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/prime_mover); alternatively, a motor (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electric_motor) is a device which produces mechanical power from other forms of energy (such as electricity, a flow of hydraulic fluid, or compressed air). Everytime we get on the subject of engines I try to drop hints by using the correct word but he doesn't seem to get it.

The definition of a motor is a device that transforms any kind of energy into mechanical energy. In an internal combustion engine, you have an explosion, energy, which is transformed into mechanical energy, torque. Therefore, its called a MOTOR and an ENGINE.

An engine(specifically a car engine- not one of your general physics engines) is a TYPE of motor... a motor encompasses MANY types of "motors"
