Here is my situation.

I am about to aquire a 1970 Lotus Europa. It is a complete car, minus the fact that the engine is missing.

There were only 9300 Europa's made, period. So the original engine is almost impossible to come by.

I've heard a lot of people swapping a 4AGE engine in it. I know it's a Toyota engine, but other than that, not too much. I don't follow Toyota, other than the Supra, that much.

So if I can get help on this, I would appreciate it!

Thanks guys!

see also for performance.......

ae92 levin
ae92 trueno
ae101 levin
ae101 trueno

the ae92 trueno's had the legendary 20v's in them. thats right 5 valves per cylinder and ITB set up from the factory. the silvertop early model 20v was MAF based and produced around 160hp, but had better tourque ratings than its later predessesor the black top. with the silvertop though you cant enjoy the ITB's because of the MAF based system , most eople find a blacktop ecu and harness and convert it to MAP. to enable them to run ITB's. also not to forget these engines have toyotas VVT (like vtech) and rev to 8000rpms.

the ae101 truenos , have the 20v black top. its got the larger ports and gives better top end performance at 165hp and is ready to run ITB's , due to its factory map setup. but low end tourque isnt quite as noticable as with the silvertop. the black top has lighter smaller internals which allows it to rev quicker and higher at 8200 rpms.

the ae92 levins , have a 4agze in them. these are factory supercharged with 10 lbs of boost resulting in 160 hp. but have gobbs and gobbs more torque than the n/a varients. most ae92 gze's are MAF based , and most owners use this block to convert to turbo. seeming as toyota already took care of the dirty work by factory forging the crank , rods , and pistons , as well as semi ceramic coating the pistons. 350 hp can be seen on stock internals here safely. the 4agze in the later 2 varients ae92 and ae101 are pretty well sought after.

the ae101 levins have the same forged internals , 10 lbs. of boost , and awesome torque but with some differences....the ae101 varient is map based , and is a DLI design meaning coilpacks , and uses a wastespark design like the evo. this engine produces 170hp.

if im correct for what i know of the europa its a rr or mr vehicle meaning the engine is in the rear , and transversely mounted like a fwd is. well if the toyota tranny can fit as well , the black top has a available 6 speed close ratio lsd tranny mated to it in most cases. the 4agze has a close ratio 5 speed more apt to deal with the instanious torque of the gze's supercharger, and also sports an lsd...something to consider as well.

in my opinion i would opt for the ae101 4agze...this engine with small modification can produce above 200 hp and lots of torque.

also my opinion isnt biased in case you wonder...i have an ae101 heavily modified in an ae100 sedan (94 corolla) time attack car , and an ae101 4age20vbt in my ae86 gt-s corolla. also my wife has an ae101 4age20vbt in her prizm. prizm and ae100 corolla is fwd , and the ae86 bt is rwd. my gze has more torque and is way quicker even in the stock form than the bt. but the bt does have the upper hand in the upper rpm range on top end. the gze redlines at 7200 rpms , but the s/c runs out of huff at around 6000 rpms.

hope this helps.

heres you some visual differences as well for reference...old pics , but good enough.

first up , the black top 20v.....note both engines can be horizontally opposed or transversely mounted.
