View Full Version : Power Mods my daily's gsr build. Budget 1.9 liter

Well, I just felt the itch for just a little more power out of my daily. It already has a gsr in it, hondata, I/h/e coupled to an Ls trans can be kinda linear and ho-hum. So I looked around and bought only the best deals I came across, as well as the best bang-for-the-buck parts. This isn't supposed to be a fast car, just something fun. I just really like to build engines, this is the 5th for myself alone. Time to break out all of the engine building toys soon because I don't lack much on parts. I expect it to do about 185-205 whp, and about 135-145 whtq. Kind of a broad window but its always a wild card until you get it on the dyno and make your first pull. I kind of expect fun and good gas mileage out of it since I get about 36-38 mpg averages right now.

First off I guess I will name off what I have so far and what is left to purchase. The engine is a b18c1
Bottom end(stock):
b18c1 block, bored to 81.5mm
Ls crankshaft, micropolished
Ls rods, have been resized for bolts
Arp rod bolts
Rs machine 81.5mm pr3 pistons
Balanced rotating assembly and soon to be blueprinted when I start
ARP head studs
Hot tanked:rolleyes:

cylinder head P72:
head has had ports cleaned up
supertech valves
skunk2 stage 2 tuner series cams
skunk2 tuner series dual valve springs
skunk2 titanium retainers
extended IM studs
Hondata IM gasket
AEBS IM
Azraceandmachine cam seal
head has been resurfaced and hot tanked

bolt ons:
CTR crank pulley
RMF style header
Exedy steel light weight flywheel and stage 1 clutch
b16 trans with Ls 5th installed
motor mount inserts with some solid mounts
Apexi WS2 exhaust
SRI
Obd1 h22a 345cc injectors, already modified an extra harness with the resistor box plugged in.
Omnipower test pipe(Alabama aka no emissions):taun:

Internals, all honda, almost every piece is replaced short of like the LMA's. I don't use cheap parts though. Most of the stuff isn't pictured yet, I'll get pics of it this weekend and download them.

Comments and critisizim welcome. I'll get more pictures soon since so much is not pictured, and of the assembly process when I start that.

Nah that's my game room, air hockey table and all the game systems and shit. But there hasn't been a single drop of oil on the floor yet.

And to comment on the oil squirters, FUCK those damn pain in the ass oil squirters. It took me 3 hours worth of bending and test fitting to get them to not hit the damn crank or pistons. They look like a snake now lol

That crusty belt cover goes behind a clean belt cover, and only the edges are seen, which are clean BTW lol. But I've been blue printing the engine the entire way. Every clearance and torque is spec'd and I am very confident it will last a long time since this isn't my 6th build for myself. But look later today for more pics. Thanks for the comments.

Well, got as far as I can until Saturday for the most part. I found out that I was missing 2 of the dowels that go to the cam caps when mocking up the head. On Intake cam cap 5 there are no dowels:(. So I'm going to pick some up and buy small random crap from my tuner. Then commence with putting it in time and adjusting the valves and putting the rest of the pieces on. Well here are a couple of unfinished pics, but close. Just need to install the cams, and adjust timing and the valve lash. BTW the black plastic looks much worse when you take a picture of it. It looks pretty good in person.

As soon as I get this one in, I take the h2b out of my other car and start on it. It already has a few mods, most of them will be going back on it. Looking to make great power on it. It already makes 215 on a real low reading dyno and traps 108 on street tires. I'll start pulling it out this weekend and show some pics.

My transmission is very special, and overly expensive, more expensive than my R trans i bought. I bought it from Silversol a ways back for $600, found out the diff was grenaded, got some money back from him, had the dif replaced as well as an Ls 5th gear installed;$700. Decided I wasn't going to use my LSD b16 trans so I took the lsd out and put it in the trans you see,got it shimmed out and new diff bearings, also modifying case for the factory lsd. $125.(no labor since I traded the diff and case and guts of the 3rd gear grinding trans for that. So I have $1500 in a b16 trans, a real nice b16 trans:cry:

Well I got it in, and I must say, I ran into a whole shit ton of problems.
Just seemed that everything was running against me, first off getting it in there was no problem. But later I noticed that that the 40/40 prop valve my friend put on was cross threaded on 2 of 6 of the fittings. Well with the engine in, it is really hard to change these anyways. So I tried putting the stock one back on to no effect, the lines themselves. I thankfully managed to get the one for the passenger rear threaded back in. Thankfully. But the driver front wouldn't do so, it was to F'd up.So I took it off my other hatch and put it in. So basically I spent 2 hours of my time fixing complete bull shit. It crunk up flawlessly and ran great considering it was un tuned. I drove it 50 miles and changed the oil.

Next morning I went down the road and about 2 miles away from my house my driver side axle popped out from the half shaft. I got my friend to bring me some tools and I used my slide sledge to put it back in. Then I drove the 1.5 hours to get it tuned. I got there on time still, but the dyno operator was late, and my tuner was late also.
So I got shafted somehow since the people who had later appointments got to go ahead of me, and my friend had to be home earlier, so I had to drive back home and go back down there and be there at 6:30. Not to mentioned I hadn't slept in about 36 hours.

so it mad about what I expected it to. I was thinking truthfully at 185/125, but it made a little less. It sure does sound good. I had only actuated vtec once during driving it, and it bogged like a bastard. The cam opened up too early for my current map which with such large secondaries slowed air velocity. here are some pics at the dyno. The car is dirty because I haven't washed it due to all the rain.

Awesome! Sucks to hear about the problems you had with it! Where did you take it to get tuned? That's poor service if you ask me.

179/123

Well here's the tune sheet. look at the mega dip on vtec engagement to start with. As you can see I picked up like 40+ wheel in the mid range. It is still a conservative tune on a known low reading dyno(just a little so) It's still 21 wheel over the other gsr and

oh and it was Walker dyno.

No offense... but your graph needs work. It appears that you either have a terrible harmonic in the cams (unlikely) or that your vtec crossover point is in the wrong spot (more likely). Your tuner needs to move your engagement point. Crossover for your build needs to be much higher than where it is based on this graph. Where is it set to right now?

The blue is after tuning, the red is before. vtec engages at like 5800 I believe. The red graph is what I started out with, that is not how it is now. The air fuel is pretty much perfect across the board, compared to the starting point.

Nice man. Congratz on the build. I feel you on the problems. I had a good couple of problems right after I finished my build. I was too much of a hurry though so it was bound to happen to me. Lol.

Yeah I've got a few bugs I need to sort out this weekend with it. But overall I'm happy with it.
