View Full Version : The End of an Era...may she Rest in Pieces :(

Some of you already know what happened, most do not, so here it is. On February 21st, 6 months ago today, I was driving to pick up my daily when my car started smoking. After swerving into a parking lot, the car caught fire and was burnt to a total loss. I stood there and watched 5 years of hard work up in flames, literally. The fire was an electrical fire, and the cause is not going to be discussed as it is not certain what happened, and at this point I do not want to think about it anymore

Anyway the reason I have not posted this sooner was because I had been dealing with insurance. Long story short, I am not getting nearly what I put into the car, so the car was delivered to me today to strip off what I could sell. So today was the last day I will ever see my B5.5, and this is the last set of new pictures that will ever be posted.

It has been a long road, and it is unfortunate I will never be able to see the project to completion. Especially with how close I was coming to the end. Today truely was the end of an era for me. Ill stop here before I get too emotional over this.

Anyway, for the newer members, here is all the info on my car before the fire http://www.passatworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=138696

Now for today, demolition and the final goodbye.

It started off bright and early at 7:45am when the car was delivered to my good friend Tony's house to help with the tear down. Flatbed and all since the car would not roll anymore

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f279/CarbonGS/2009/8-20-09%20Passat%20Demolition/81909jpld.jpg

Apparently it took him 3 tries to get in the driveway, then he almost hit the mailbox

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f279/CarbonGS/2009/8-20-09%20Passat%20Demolition/81909jpld-2.jpg

Finally got the right angle and backed it in

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f279/CarbonGS/2009/8-20-09%20Passat%20Demolition/81909jpld-4.jpg

Off the flatbed she goes

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f279/CarbonGS/2009/8-20-09%20Passat%20Demolition/81909jpld-7.jpg

Here she is waiting for me to arrive

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f279/CarbonGS/2009/8-20-09%20Passat%20Demolition/81909jpld-9.jpg

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f279/CarbonGS/2009/8-20-09%20Passat%20Demolition/81909jpld-11.jpg

Then I got there and did the honors of unwrapping my poor baby :(

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f279/CarbonGS/2009/8-20-09%20Passat%20Demolition/81909jpld-14.jpg

A few carnage shots of the interior, about as roasted as can be, these next few are not for the faint of heart

Time to start the teardown

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f279/CarbonGS/2009/8-20-09%20Passat%20Demolition/81909jpld-21.jpg

The trunk still looks pretty much the same ;) About the only part that wasnt completely gone

Tony analyzing the situation, figuring out where to begin

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f279/CarbonGS/2009/8-20-09%20Passat%20Demolition/81909jpld-26.jpg

The start of the teardown, a few panels removed, however this was just the beginning

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f279/CarbonGS/2009/8-20-09%20Passat%20Demolition/81909jpld-28.jpg

The engine didnt have much to be saved, goodbye beautiful airbrushing

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f279/CarbonGS/2009/8-20-09%20Passat%20Demolition/81909jpld-29.jpg

Starting to jack up the car, this is the worst corner. You can see where the fire started and wrapped around the vehicle. Check out that wheel :icon_eek:

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f279/CarbonGS/2009/8-20-09%20Passat%20Demolition/81909jpld-31.jpg

One wheelin yo!

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f279/CarbonGS/2009/8-20-09%20Passat%20Demolition/81909jpld-33.jpg

Tony just bought an impact gun which made our life so much easier. Especially when the wheels had 5 nuts, then 5 more bolts for the adapters

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f279/CarbonGS/2009/8-20-09%20Passat%20Demolition/81909jpld-34.jpg

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f279/CarbonGS/2009/8-20-09%20Passat%20Demolition/81909jpld-36.jpg

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f279/CarbonGS/2009/8-20-09%20Passat%20Demolition/81909jpld-37.jpg

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f279/CarbonGS/2009/8-20-09%20Passat%20Demolition/81909jpld-38.jpg

The ROASTED wheel...always wondered what they would have looked like with a solid black powdercoat...

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f279/CarbonGS/2009/8-20-09%20Passat%20Demolition/81909jpld-39.jpg

The bag completely disintegrated on this corner

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f279/CarbonGS/2009/8-20-09%20Passat%20Demolition/81909jpld-40.jpg

Time to get the seats to fold down...that took a little bit of work

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f279/CarbonGS/2009/8-20-09%20Passat%20Demolition/81909jpld-42.jpg

Most of the trunk torn apart

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f279/CarbonGS/2009/8-20-09%20Passat%20Demolition/81909jpld-43.jpg

And now its empty

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f279/CarbonGS/2009/8-20-09%20Passat%20Demolition/81909jpld-44.jpg

Surprisingly, 3 corners of the airride are still in great condition

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f279/CarbonGS/2009/8-20-09%20Passat%20Demolition/81909jpld-45.jpg

I even sawed off the back half of the exhaust, WAY to much work went into that dual setup to let it go to waste

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f279/CarbonGS/2009/8-20-09%20Passat%20Demolition/81909jpld-46.jpg

Insurance wouldnt let me return the car without wheels on it. So I put a set of stockers back. Check out how low the car sits on 15s with no suspension

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f279/CarbonGS/2009/8-20-09%20Passat%20Demolition/81909jpld-53.jpg

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f279/CarbonGS/2009/8-20-09%20Passat%20Demolition/81909jpld-57.jpg

Teardown complete!

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f279/CarbonGS/2009/8-20-09%20Passat%20Demolition/81909jpld-61.jpg

Time to say goodbye

also i cant tell if the bottle in the back is real or not, but if it is, good thing the fire didnt reach back there or you would have had a moment...where you paused...and looked at the person next to you, screamed "NAAWWWWWWSSS" then this would have happened

Damn man...that's not cool (like some of the comments in here as well). What are your plans for the next ride?

I had a car catch fire. It had a bad motor and too much pressure built up in the crank and pushed the dipstick out and dumped oil on to a red hot exhaust. It sucks to stand there and know there is nothing you can do :( (in my case though, someone tossed me a 1 liter Mtn Dew that was barely enough to put it out)

I was hanging out with my buddy last week and he mentioned something about "a really nice Passat belonging to Jordan that had burnt up."

I kept telling myself "No, not that one" the whole time because I knew something happened to the Passat after reading about your Accord, but I really didn't want to believe that your car went like that.

Your Passat was probably my favorite of any car on Import Atlanta. Really sad to see your car go like this. Hope to see great new things in the future though...I mean, new beginnings, right?

Today is exactly a year since the car caught fire which is why Tony bumped it up.

You can always buy a 4th one new, I am looking to get rid of the 3 for really cheap so even with buying a new 4th wheel it would still be a good deal for 19'' Works.

Yea, I just need the european license plate tub for the hatch now so I can actually use it. Then drive around with no US plate ;)

also i cant tell if the bottle in the back is real or not, but if it is, good thing the fire didnt reach back there or you would have had a moment...where you paused...and looked at the person next to you, screamed "NAAWWWWWWSSS" then this would have happened

actually the bottle on the floor was a nitrous bottle but it was never filled up, always empty. his air tanks were on the sides of the trunk standing vertical.

when it was all still working

Wow, didn't know you finally posted about this Jordan. It happened down the street from me, but when I rolled up after the call, the firefighters already had the fire put out, and it was a shock to see, and I can only imagine what you were going through. Again, sorry to see all your hard work go up in flames, but God was definitely watching out for you that day and I'm glad you made it out without a scratch on you.
