Bonneville Salt Flats anyone?
Not much to say about being at the mecca of speed as the pics speak for themselvs...rather overwhelming to be there, it's so incredibly vast...and bright. I have more pics, but they're on the mem. card still.

Definitely not your normal background :D

How fast were you going out there? Is there an official/unofficial speed limit?

Didn't take my car down the run...although it's wide open and no one will stop you. But do it at the wrong time of year and you'll be well sunk into the salt. I didn't run because it was 105* and the other cars out there came back coated in salt and I didn't feel like getting it all over my car.

Mr Clean..the OP is a mod :lmao:
(I was soooo ready to have a go with you in Nashville when you came rollin down the onramp right up next to me on I24 :ninja: )

No real problems. I ran into some cooling issues when at 5,000+ft altitude in 90*+F temps when running at 4,000rpm+ with the a/c on full blast....and my temps. were creeping up doing the track day. I did have to add 1.5qts of oil over the duration of the trip (mostly because of long/higher RPM engine braking in the mountains..PCV letting some oil by) and my clutch slave cylinder required a hint of grease....but i'd hardly consider those "problems".
When we stopped in Amarillo and I went to get gas, I was kinda concerned to see 90 as the "good" stuff....sucks for them. Everywhere on the trip I got 91 at the pump..and it was really weird to see 85 as regular.

I did manage to place 2nd at the track day which was setup in time-attack style with one warmup lap folowed by 3 balls-to-the-wall laps and one cool down. The guy who got first also had like 150rwhp+ (2.0L stroker and a GT3076 with 400rwhp) more than me and was a hell of a driver. His time was averaging mid 1:02s and eventually got a 1:01.9 and set a new track record for a car with doors (the only things faster are karts and Westfield/Catarhams). I managed a 1:03.1..which was considered smoking fast at the beginning of the day and is as fast as the LS3 swapped FM shop car being driven by someone who knows the track well.

At the end of the track day, the guy who had FTD destroyed his transmission and the LSxMiata (not running for official times) cracked the oil pan...which ended the day early. I probably could have been down in the 1:02s too :(

Omfail. Lol. And racing me would have been no fun. My car is slow as balls. I was just gonna wave but you had your serious face on lol.

Whats traction like there? If you were to brake after a high speed run, would you be more likely to slide/spin out?

JennB
08-14-2009, 09:55 AM
We didn't drive on it much because it was really hot, we didn't want to clean the car, had a trunk full of luggage and they were prepping for speed week. Plus, we were warned to be careful far out on the salt because it had recently rained and it gets quite squishy out there and you can get stuck. If we were staying near there, it would be easy to go out there but as just passing though, it would have been a pain in the ass. Other cars that went out were absolutely caked in salt. Next time, we're out there we'll fly in and take a rental car and top that sucker out.

But the salt is hard as a rock where it's dry. Not slick, really, but I'm sure you could go for a spin. No worries though, there is NOTHING to hit. Literally nothing.

Is there any loose sand-like salt on top? I have first hand experience of catching sand on the road, It's not something i want to do again.

and next time, rent a vette:yes:

JennB

Not where we were. It's not like sand, it's chunky like big grains of salt, not fine. I'm not sure if the texture changes any as you go out further though but there were not grains in the air like you see sand blowing at the beach. I touched it and nothing got on my hands. It gets stirred up as you drive on it though but most of the salt just gets caked in the wheel wells and under the car.

Doppelgänger
08-14-2009, 10:48 AM
Yes and no. There are parts where it's loose and areas where it's packed hard and feels like asphalt.

I always wanted to go out there full speed and just yank the wheel and spin lol.
