Posted: 1:35 pm EDT August 5, 2009 Updated: 4:22 pm EDT August 5, 2009

ROME, Ga. -- A Verizon Wireless employee captured shocking video of a mother dragging her child through the store by a monkey backpack leash.

According to a police report obtained by Channel 2 Action News, Melissa Means told Rome police officer Keith Green that she was having problems with her child.

The incident occurred in late April on Broad Street in Rome.

Means, of Gaylsville, Ala., told police that she suffered from lupus and pneumonia and that her son was refusing to walk and because of her health problems, she could not pick him up. According to the report, Means said her son liked being “pulled around by his monkey.”

While investigating the incident, Green spoke with a Verizon Wireless employee who had videotaped the incident on his cell phone. The video was posted on the video sharing Web site LiveLeak.com. Green said the child had a red bruise mark on the left side of his neck from the backpack strap.

Representatives from the Division of Family and Children Services (DFCS) were notified of the incident and the child was later released to his grandmother.

Means was charged with cruelty to children and taken to the Floyd County Jail.

I see nothing wrong here....if the kid was acting the fool then why not? It's not as if it was across a parking lot or something....it was carpet. I love how the kid wasn't even moving.....like a sack of potatoes.

I guess she really needed a phone.

But I totally agree that some people just should not be allowed to reproduce. Just like some people should not be allowed to drive.

I haven't seen a backpack leash in a long time. My parents used to have to put me on one when we would go out in public because I would just wander off if they didn't watch me. I don't think the backpack part is so bad, but the dragging...yeah that's not so good. I can't believe no one said anything to her in the store though.

To be honest, the kid didn't even look alive. I mean, he didn't even move. He wasn't kicking, or doing anything. I agree, he did look like a sack of potatoes. Maybe he did like it, I'm guessing she does this to him at home during free time? I also noticed the other customers just looked....wtf? TACKLE THE BITCH!!! I mean, thats a free tackle. Then u just tell u cops u did it because you thought the child was in danger.

I don't have a prob with the monkey backpack. My daughter has one. But I only used it on her bekuz her bad ass used to like to walk off, and I didn't want to chance her being "curious" while we were at the airport flying from ATL to Sacramento. She's a a year older now so I don't use it on her and she understands that she better keep up or mommy will "leave her."

Dragging the kid was with out question, just wrong. Through, if needed, my son will have one. There was a little girl at the Pittsburgh Zoo last weekend, of which was on one of those leashes. It wasn't a big deal really. She a couple times, seemed to want to walk away from her parents. Once she hit the end of the leash, she just cam bac to them.

I'm also a rather paranoid indiviual, which makes me leary of some nut job grabbing my son.
