I don't even try to defend rap music with people that have POV's like the OP. I will however say that your post can apply to any type of music out there. Take rock music for example where they talk about killing one another all the time, committing suicide, and heavy drug use. This doesn't just go for rap music, but all genres, if you want to hear good music turn the radio off. The reason you only here certain types of music being played on the radio is because stations have to appeal to the masses and pull in the kind of listeners that their sponsors are relying on to buy the products they advertise during the commercial breaks. The record labels know this as well and they promote certain artists more than others because the music that the marketable person is producing can be dumbed down and they aren't going to say anything that upsets corporate America.

That's because rock music isn't as violent and drug related (in their music) as rap is. Not even close. There's no rock music that glorifies killing people. Raping women. Calling them every derogatory name in the book. Only rap and even newer R&B. And only every once in a while will you hear of a drug reference. The main eras that you "heard" about drugs in rock was in the mid '60s to early 70s.

That's why the old school/early days of rap are so much better to listen to because there is something to actually listen to. I know true hip hop of today is the same way, but I don't like the music styles so I don't listen to it. Later, QD.

Many people find it easy to generalize ALL rap/hip hop as violent, condoning violence etc. Some of it does for sure although usually its the whack emcees that do that. However you have to understand some of the cultural context for it. Hiphop was born in the slums of NYC. Violence, drugs, etc were what people saw all around them everyday. People wanted to tell the story of their world. Many of the original emcess were telling people how things were, not how things should be and newer emcees who don't even understand their own genre's history simply try to mimic the subject matter .

Additionally, rapping is also story telling. An emcee can be a persona (just look at MF Doom, his persona wears a mask and he even has other people do his shows sometimes). When you watch an action movie with lots of violence, most people don't immediately say that the movie is condoning the violence in it, or that the actors are violent people. Many modern day rappers are just that... actors who are playing a roll, trying to entertain. They even keep in character for interviews, etc because that's helping them sell records.

And finally as has been said previously...you can't base your entire opinion of a genre of music on what radio's play. They have one goal only, to make money and if they feel violent, shocking rap will get them money...thats exactly what they are gonna play. It sure seems to be working for them.

Well my knowledge is based on my personal discussions with people who were around and directly involved in the beginning of hip hop. I consider myself a member of the hip hop community and culture and I don't mean that I just listen to the music and go to festivals. If you believe you can teach me more about the culture and music of hip hop, please do so because I will always be a student.

Well my knowledge is based on my personal discussions with people who were around and directly involved in the beginning of hip hop. I consider myself a member of the hip hop community and culture and I don't mean that I just listen to the music and go to festivals. If you believe you can teach me more about the culture and music of hip hop, please do so because I will always be a student.

After reading back through the posts, I see where I left out one important detail. I'm not saying the hip hop started in Africa. But the roots of hip hop do stem from the country. They have done the same type of music for years upon years that hip hop expanded on throughout the 70s. I listen to the original godfather of hip hop, Gil Scott-Heron, along with the Last Poets, quite frequently. They are the ones known to have brought that genre from Africa to America. Then it gave way to what we know as old school hip hop. Later, QD.

It's not that ppl think it's awesome to rob, rape, and come from bad areas. It's that the rap played on radio talks about the avg americans dream to be rich, popular, successful, and having lots of women. It plays on society's addiction for cheap thrills and immoral acts. We live in a culture where we spend the first 20 or so of out lives in school to essentially make money. Our society teaches us to idolize and want money so it is natural for music to discuss things that most of us want such as woman, cars, and nice houses.

this topic. as much as i love hip hop, i'm tired of defending it because some ppl listen to music they may not agree with. hell all genre's of music has it's flaw, but rap music gets pointed out the most, why? because its the most imitated. society wants to imitate the things of the "hood", then complain about the outcome.

Country music= depressing music
Rock and roll= drug's, sex, money
alternative= skateboarding, tight pants wearing sceen boys
rap/hiphop= drugs, sex, money ( same as another one on hear)
