View Full Version : Honda guy thinking of Eclipse 2nd gen?

Ok, so I am thinking of different platforms for my next project. I am a Honda guy but have to confess, love the look of the 2nd gen eclipse/talon. So I need to know the following.

1.Are the 420A's worth the trouble?
2.Any common problems to look for?
3.Did the 4g63 NA come oe in the Eclipse and which models.
4.Easy to work on as most Honda's?

1-420 is not worth modifying
2-car might have a problem arise that cant even be fixed at dealer.cu has to be flashed and car has eratic stutter.had one before.they say they have some type of recirculation kit but it might or might not solve problem.
3-4g63 na did not come in the 2g body.the only car that motor can be swapped in is the spyder with the 2.4l motor.
4-mitsubishi is basically same to maintain as a honda.

heres a checklist when it comes to dsm's

1.buy a turbo model either a gst or gsx. n/a eclipse's arent worth the time.
2. do not buy a car with a 7 bolt motor. meaning either buy a 1g or a 6 bolt swapped 2g
3.i hope you know your way around a set of wrenches.

Ok thanks. Trying to find a turbo 2nd gen seems almost impossible within a decent price range. Maybe I can find one that needs new engine to swap for 6 bolt.

ive got a 96 talon but it has the 420a in it! ftl! ill sell it to you for 1500!

yes, but only in the Euro Spec models but they are very rare in the states. If you can find one you wont be the fastest guy on the block but you will most likley be the only one with that car/engine combo.


I happen to have a white 97 GST that im willing sale if your interested.

The NA 4g63 came factory in 1g NT's and Galant GSX's.

420a is worth mondifying if you do it right i had a built 420a 420as come in the rs and gs model eclipse 4g63 which is what i have now can be found in the gst and gsx

2g 4g63 Eclipse's are a far better platform to work on than Hondas. It's when you get one that has been owned by
someone who hacked it up that it gets troublesome. You gotta remember the newest one is STILL 10 YEARS OLD !!!! And they still look good.

You only have problems when you do mods cheap, or incorrect. My 97 GST Spyder can attest to that. And there's
nothing wrong with the 7bolt motors. So what a few guys had crank walk !?!? Big deal, 100's of thousands of these cars
where made and there's a few hundred with CW. I've owned at least one of every model Eclipse/Talon except the 95 model
year. Never had CW with any of them. I've also had a 99GSX with a 6bolt swap that was nothing but problems.

Get a 420A if that's all you can find. Then get a turbo kit for it. A co-worker has one on his and it does not have crazy hp, but it's decent.

ps: Spyders also had the SOHC 4g64 2.4l. Get one of those and put the 4g63 head on it !!!
