so this goes kinda along with the "who copied who" thread. i am sitting here thinking to myself, now i know this has been gone over before, when will we as a culture actually get back into doing shit for ourselves and not doing it based on other peoples opinions again? im taking body kits, crazy paint jobs, interiors gone wild etc. it just seems like that will never happen again? why not? are people in the "scene" just to scared to get rejected? seems to me that the cars that get rejected by a lot of other people usually get the most attention right? so why do we seriously have to do it based on other peoples opinions?
Now dont get me wrong i am guilty myself of clowning and criticizing many things that have been posted up on this site, and thats wrong. but i have come to learn to accept other peoples thoughts and ideas as a good thing and as their own. I dont really judge anymore, and as a matter of fact why should anyone else think someone elses car is stupid. i mean doesnt hating the car actually give it more attention then having everyone actually like the car and then it dying out of attention(if that makes sense).
I am sure it will never be the same as it once was and if it ever gets close to that way it will barely resemble the way the culture was 10 years ago. but does it hurt to like someones shit just cars they put the time and effort into making it what they wanted out of their car, their canvas, their joy? i think not.

fuck that term, that term has gotten way the fuck out of context. RICE is just a characterization of all IMPORT cars that was started by Domestics. then stupid ass kids who were modding Imports werent liking people and thats were they started turning around the term on their own and clowning on things that werent "cool" too them.

But seriously why the hell does that stop people from doing what they want with a car.

Ive always said its those douchebags that put Louie Vitton on their 98 Integra door panels with some old ass wheels with a paint job and think their car is some ode to the car gods.
Remember when we used to make fun of the DONK guys with the LV interiors and Gucci interiors LOL the honda guys are doing the same thing now.
There is this crowd of homos that hangs out at Starbucks on barret every weekend that all they have is a bunch of slow ass cars with stupid offsets and covered bumpers/lips that think they are gods gift to the import world. They are posers.
But they are the majority of the scene kids right now. so until they either A) Die a horrible death B) grow up and move on we will be stuck with it

I dont hate on the JDM stuff either, i mean its cool whatever. I love the look of a stock hatch with a DECENT drop and black slipstreams. Its simple, its nice, its perfect.
What i HATE is this stupid fucking trend of low offset wheels sticking out like a lowrider tucking 15in rims slammed on the ground with no suspension travel and retarded negative camber. Then they do some half ass wire tuck on a 200k mile LS motor and think its some marvel to oooooo and ahhhhhhh at.

Dude, Im 100% behind you but dont count on it changing any time soon (or ever). The car scene is just like ANY "scene", the cool/popular people choose what the next hype is and the little sheep follow. Plain and simple. If the cool people want body kits, the sheep get the knockoff body kits. If the cool people want JDM cars, the sheep will have wannabe JDM cars. If the cool people want VIP, the sheep will try their damnedest to VIP their Accord.
Its never gonna stop. If you build what you want then you will be happy. If you build what "they" want, no one will be happy. They will just look at it and comment on your pathetic attempt.
My next project is gonna bring it back to basics. Im bringing back 10 years ago but still keeping this years edge. Im making it what I want and solely what I want. Sure Ill get rice comments but I dont give a fuck. I know Ill have put my own thought and time into it instead of whatever a forum or magazine says.

i agree, to a point. I think you should "do what you do" and make it your own. But I think its the fact that everyone tries comparing their cars to each other and egotistical people have started trying to out do each other. So in the process, they've become more and more alike so that they can be compared.
for example, it'd be hard to take a very nicely modded, lowered coupe and compare it to a giant jacked up 4x4 covered in mud. or to a dub on 24". know what i mean?
I think show cars are cool, as long as they claim to be show cars, and not high preformance cars. and vice versa.

SO, what about full blown show cars that also take it to the track and hand out ass whoopings?? Doesn't that defeat your whole statement? I know plenty of show/drag/circuit cars and have seen them as well. Do you feel it's wrong if you got beat by a full kitted civic on 18's with a fully built type r swap boosted, with 30 psi?? What would be said if after that, he showed up at TFS and took first place for best of show or something??

SHOW cars to me are like ones you see at SEMA or NOPI Nationals, cars that really serve no purpose on the street and are crazy audio visual. Great deal of body work, paint, etc. Performance may be a factor but its not the main attraction.
The problem with the main honda crowd is that body kits are RICE and audio/visual stuff is RICE. So they are so handicapped that they really have NOTHING to do anymore. I mean how many Integras with front Lips can you really do something different to?
About 2-3 years ago they started messing with the wire tucking stuff. Thats old school VW anyways.
Then it seems in the last 1-2 years the Wheel fad has popped up. Some guy out in cali did it to an EG and it became the thread of the month on Honda-tech and everyone bought into it. Now its an excuse for the lame kids to do something to their $1500 civic and think they are better than someone else. Its the cool thing to slam your car .5in off the ground on some lowrider wheels with -12091029 negative camber.
Now the popular thing ive seen in the last few months is this stupid "designer" cloth on your door panels, bumper, hood , roof, etc. This to me is just the epitome of lame. You might as well build a Donk. I mean Gucci on a Integra, are we fucking serious?
The 240 Crowd love it or hate it, they can get away with the crazy wheels, offsets, body kits etc so they can do a lot more stylish things and its cool to see what they do although a lot of their stuff is getting played out now too.
I think the thing 5-8 years ago was that it wasnt that big of a deal to have a bodykit on a honda. Now its like the cardinal sin. Originality doesnt exist anymore

Why the hell do people care. It's not like they have to drive them.
There will always be people that copy other people because it's what they like and it's what is cool.
I Personally prefer my car stock. i don't need to be super low or have an amazing paint job.

you know for a fact that even though it may be a well-rounded car. i bet you that people would still call it rice just because of the way that it looked. now a days it seems that people are more about the impracticality of a car then the actual true functionality.
that brings me to the slammed/crazy offsets that are around. wtf is the point? i dont understand it. why drive a car that is basically impractical. i car was ment to drive, not have to all of a sudden slow down at every bump in the road. i just dont get it and the making sure the offset is percisely what it should be on a lowered car so it will stick out from under the fenders, eh. to me a car is meant to drive, not go slow and look good. why not just keep your height at a reasonable level with STILL a little bit of fender gap and still look sharp?
my car may look like almost every integra out there. and i know that. but i dont care, its how I wanted it to look as time went on. I used to LOVE the look of the bomex kit and always wanted to get one of those but it was the cost of it at the time and being in highschool that wouldnt let me do it.

The people who are different or don't care what others think get royally bashed.
There are very few really unique cars on this site. Every Honda on here to me looks the same, is boring, and for some unknown reason Honda owners think they are the shit. That's the stereotype I get from it.
Shit I paint half my cars with a roller just to make it decent, and worry about performance. I track my cars, and spending time and money to make a pretty little car is useless to me, it's made to track, if I crash, oh well, it cost me $30 to paint and a $5 Lowes lip that WORKS.

This is one of the best written threads I've seen in a while. I fix up my car to my liking. Not anyone elses. If they don't like it I don't care. If they bash me, I don't care. Look at the well done show type cars that everyone bashes. When one of them pulls in to a meet or a show, where does everyone flock to? They immediately circle around that car. Why? Because it is bad ass. They may talk shit about it later but while they are graced with it's presence they admire it. Most of the time it is jealosy. If they had the money they would do it, but they dont. If they were to try, they would have a half assed car with shoddy cheap parts, crappy body work, primer cause the paint job is expensive, then guess what, then they fall into the category of TRUE RICER. Therefore it has became much easier to bash it and say how rice it is, to make their car look better.
PS: Also a lot of the "kids" have never seen a real true nicely done up all out car in real life. It is always more impressive to see it in person than on a forum or magazine where you can't truly see the quality, and appreciate the time and effort put into a car like that.

I mean thats just simple and i like it. I dont care if its JDM or CLEAN or whatever. IMO Toms hatch is still one of my favorites. and its just a simple paint job with Black Spoon wheels. Its no uber JDM and has some stupid interior. Its a simple hatch with an R motor.
Its functional.
Hell i liked Buckys EM1. It was nice. I liked the paint scheme, the interior, the bay, etc. it wasnt anything super ground breaking, but it was just well thought out and well done IMO.
I like Jays S2000, its not crazy over done, its got just the right amount of offset, i dig the hardtop (which is getting played out lol).
Bens TSX is subtle but clean. It has expensive wheels, expensive brakes, but it doesnt scream at you. Its also a $30,000 car.
Some of those K Swapped cars at IA were pretty cool. But i guess i just dont get excited at stuff like that anymore, well not enough to drive 3-4 hours for a weekend to go look at them.

A lot of you in this thread are saying that you think being slammed on the ground is "retarded" and "fucking stupid" and "no functionality." Yet you keep saying "make a car your own" and people need to stop hating.
Well, I think gaudy body kits on ANY car is fucking stupid. That's why I don't have one. Hell, I hated the things when they were "cool."
My car is slammed on the ground, but I like it and I'm "doing me." So don't be so quick to jump on anyone that says they think a certain civic looks terrible because it has a body kit, crazy fiberglass audio setups, and an insane paint job. They may not be "nut-swingers." They might just be someone that hates body kits. Because just as you think laying frame is stupid, I think body kits are stupid.
I'm all for people doing their own thing, and I won't hate on them for doing what they wanna do, but that doesn't change the fact that I hate it. Most of you commenting in this thread make a point to tell OP's that you think their slammed, on Rota's, plaid interior car is "just like everyone else's" and "non-functional" and "fucking stupid." In reality most of the people you are criticizing are just trying to do them with the limited funds they have. If I don't like someones car, I tell them. But I do so with respect to the work and effort they have put into their car.
It's human nature to want to be like someone you respect and have what they have. That's why there is so much bandwagoning going on.
speedminded
07-30-2009, 11:54 AM
Most people don't have the ability or knowledge to be creative and individualize a vehicle on their own. Or the confidence. They're simply lemmings just doing what someone else has done to feel accepted.
You have bandwagon cars and you have bandwagon mods.
ANY car can be made to look nice and/or perform. You name it, it doesn't matter what it is, it CAN be done. Simple modifications and additions can make a car flow. It's still not going to appeal to everyone though. Nothing will. There isn't a car in the world that will appeal to everyone or even a majority of people in the "scene". That's the way it has always been and will never change.
I respect cars that have quality and function in mind...without shortcuts.
Stance is the number one thing for any vehicle but there will always be people taking things to extremes too...no matter how impractical it may be. Stick on fender vents make me laugh at first, then I get agitated that someone is actually making money off them lol! Same as the LED washer's a decade ago. It's normally the most ridiculous things that become a fad.
As a whole, we have the ability to make the car scene anything we want and we can take it in any direction we want.

Another reason is that it is easier to be/sounds cool/respectable online since you're hiding behind a guise of anonymity. Thus, when someone says something, without even knowing who said it they can command a following since they are so popular with rep points lol when in fact, IRL they're prob a loser who you would not want to be like at all!

Five years ago there were local daily driver civics running 10's in the 1/4.
I've known of several daily driver FWD's that will tear up most cars in the mountains completely destroying bikes (but everybody knows bikes are slower in turns, especially heavier ones).
The first time I ever ran autocross I was running 1 second behind the STI's on a mid 50 second course and was the 3rd fastest FWD of the day...on 17" wheels with stock shocks and lowering springs lol. If I had run the afternoon session I would have had the fastest FWD of the day. I think I finished 8th for the session and 14th overall for the day while trying to get traction coming out of the turns with an open diff lol...on overweight 17" wheels.
I won't even get into all the SCCA & NASA cars that tear up race tracks every weekend. 151 mph at Road Atlanta in a Prelude is fast.

I understand it's function, but ppl like you who do not go out and buy parts from retailers who support the scene are a big reason the scene is dragging!
When you buy a lip from home depot the company that makes lips for miatas isn't seeing any money. So you're buying products from a company that isn't helping the import scene, not advertising in mags, nor forums, nor setting up vendor booths. So you're leaving the company that makes quality parts for your car out to dry and they're suffering, and since they're suffering they haev no money to advertise or to setup vendor booths at local events which perpetuates the cycle.

The way I see it is if everyone would mod their car to their taste and not give a fuck what other people think the scene would be in much better shape. I love all types of imports. I bought my Celica GT-S because I wanted to be different. I have modded my car to my taste, and I really don't care who likes or dislikes me ride. I have some parts that would be considered rice on this forum, but I don't consider them rice. I have an aftermarket body kit but it is authentic, and was painted and installed properly. Does that make me a ricer just because I have a kit?

I modded my STi according to what I wanted. I would likely get picked on by a lot of subaru guys for going with a big, laggy turbo and knock-off wheels and removing the wing and putting a big heavy stereo in...etc. Fact is, at the end of the day I make the payment, so I have the ability to do whatever I feel like to my car. Same goes for the civic I'm building, yes it has all been done 1000 times over, but I have always wanted a nice and simple K20 EK, so that's exactly what I'm building. I could care less if anybody says they don't like my cars, that's their problem. I don't see a problem with the "scene" (if you can even call it that anymore) I see a problem with the people. Me personally I always go for performance first, looks secondary. ALWAYS. However I really can't knock somebody for the whole LV interior, stanced civic with wheels that stick out and such because, while it may not be what I personally like, it isn't my problem. I DO have a problem with the kid who has that civic and wants to give me shit because my car has wheel gap on some Drag's. I bought my wheels for their width. I put all the money I had leftover into the best tires I could possibly afford.

I personally find it humorous that the people who are into motorsports and drive RWD cars frequently are sticking up for fwd and the guy with a fwd sedan is discussing how unworthy of performance it is.
Regardless of drivetrain setup - FWD, RWD, AWD, etc. - any car can be made to be fast. But everyone is so afraid of doing anything different that they end up with Hondas and the same modifications. Those that truly care about performance aren't the ones making threads about their freshly sharpied fender or finish panel. While a good portion of why people end up with Hondas is the bandwagon movement, there are legit reasons why people pick them to modify in the first place. I agree with blacknightteg - so what if his car looks the same as others out there? Its his car to do with what he wants. But I bet if he posted a picture thread about it right now there would be a dozen people telling him to lower it more and do numerous other things.

knock off parts isnt the problem. The only problem i see the knock off parts doing is making trends easier to follow.
Lets say some $5000 wheel i popular. Well not everyone is going to be able to afford that wheel. But lets say Rota makes the same wheel for $500. Bam, instantly 700000 people have the same wheel.
Sure that can cause a problem when it comes to originality and how long that looks stays "fresh" but if anything it should push the guys at the top to strive to find new ways to do stuff differently.

Why should the guys at the top do anything? They didn't make any money off those 700000 sets of Rota's. There is no defending knock-offs. Had they made the money off of all those wheels then yeah, they could probably drop their prices a little and have more designs because of a bigger budget. Thats why the nicest wheels are so expensive though, because not too many people buy them.

Why should the guys at the top do anything? They didn't make any money off those 700000 sets of Rota's. There is no defending knock-offs. Had they made the money off of all those wheels then yeah, they could probably drop their prices a little and have more designs because of a bigger budget. Thats why the nicest wheels are so expensive though, because not too many people buy them.Had they spent $100+ on a design patent that protects the ornamental design of an object then nobody could legally duplicate it or import it. Automobile manufacturers have been putting patents on their wheels and wheel covers for decades.

knock offs are just aternatives for people who cant go and rip their nuts off just for one part. i dont see the harm in having something thats a copy. as long as the person doesnt project it to be something that its not.

x2...this is a great statement. If anything, this is what keeps the scene going. maybe 20% of the people can afford name brand everything...the other 80% of us have to rely on a replica part because were doin this with spare money we have saved for months....I know i have wayyyy more imporant things to pay for in my life than wasting everything i have on spoon, work, mugen, etc. My KiddRacing header makes me very happy and i most certainly didn't brake the bank on that one.

I'll admit I still like the "jdm look" but I'm not following anybody and I'm not a poser.
Alot of cars are gonna look similar b/c there's only a certain different # combo's of exterior candy (meaning, there might be a car out there similar to mine but not exact)
and the world we live in with all this internets, it makes it alot easier for ppl to bite other ppls style.
I build my cars the way I want it and I don't follow a crowd..
I take the most pride in doing the small things to my car that add character and uniqueness

stock car is no fun...
It is when it's my car. Do you know how many people come up and compliment my Honda over a "tricked out" car? I don't get comments from people just in the modding world either. I get them from folks of all ages. Do you get in your car and drive to a store less than half a mile from your home and get a comment or two every time you go? I do. And my car is stock.
For purposes of this topic:
I can safely say I am one of the few who can actually stay "original." I have a car that damn near everyone has said "awesome" about but yet no one wants it. I love it. Me having a car that everyone likes but doesn't want means I will be the lone wolf in the crowd. And, for the most part, no one wants the car because they don't care to lack the creature comforts that cars of today come with. And there's nothing wrong with that.
I can go out in my car, stock or modded, and still get reactions in large numbers.
GO OLD SCHOOL!!!
But i do agree with the "who cares what others think, do it anyway" crowd. I'm guilty of displaying my dislike for some cars posted or seen or town, but I always like to end my opinions/thoughts with a "but don't worry about what I or anyone else thinks, do what you want" comment. That's to let that person know that just because I don't like it doesn't mean he/she shouldn't do it. Later, QD.

All the vehicles ive owned, when I drive my ghia around I always get asked about it. Old people sharing there vw stories, young people asking wtf is it lol. Its got no trim, dents in it, awful shape and still draws a crowd.

Drive a race car on the street, it's like driving with a naked blonde on your roof.

People buying knock off parts is hurting vendors and in turn hurts us as well. This is a fact.
I do drive a 3k lb fwd car... I've driven a boosted teg with about 350 to the wheels, which is honestly more than a teg ever needs....but I have also driven 350's, m3's, an m5, and a c5 vette z06, etc, and I like rwd cars better, you may like fwd cars better, good for you, but I like rwd/awd cars better. If you have such a big problem with that then....lolah hell how did I miss this one.
So you're comparing m3's, m5's, and Z06's to a 350hp turbo Integra? lololol! You can't even take turns in a FWD with that power, it's useless on the street in just about any gear, and with the lightest bit of rain it is useless in every gear at all RPM's.
A $18-22k MSRP car to those that are $55-85,000? Fail. Try again.

It will come when people stop being coward ass sheep and grow some nuts. I get so tired of people bagging on originality. They should just state the truth and admit they don't have the sack to stand on their own. That is why I drive cars that they can't pronounce let alone find or drive. fuck a crowd. I'm in the scene strictly for the love of cars and meeting different but cool people with cool ideas.

Without knockoffs, there would b no competition, resulting n high prices staying high, the "authentic" companies would create a monopoly and there would b nothing you can do about it. Its called Capitalism, and without it, there wouldnt b enough ppl involved to call this a scene b/c everything would b 2 expensive. Though "knockoffs" r "knockoffs", they give everyone the chance to express themselves thru their vehicles. And some "knocksoff" work just as good as the brand name...sometimes ALL u r paying for is a brand name. So "authentic" isnt always the best choice either. And the scene is becoming dull b/c ppl r afraid of being labeled as ricers.

I dont even know how to comment on this thread...true customization is not dead, its just dead on IA. Its all pretty much been stated. Just build whatever you want and dont give a fuck what anyone else things. Thats what I do...hell the Passat had $40k+ aftermarket, a car that is usually driven by soccer moms.
