I know Honda Navi is programmed from the factory depending on what destination it is heading. I don't think the US cars get any info for Mexico. Hmmm...good question to go ask.

they work but you have to download the maps for them

Garmins will work if you download the South America maps but you have to have a new(er) one that has enough memory to hold the North America and South America maps.
My older Garmin couldn't even handle the 2010 update for all of North America so I had to pick the Southeast region only :(

its about 3 days non stop driving i think never have drove there and wrekonize i just came back from mexico and no swine flu the t.v and the news making a big deal out of it its all good over there
