View Full Version : Sports UFC Aquires Affliction! Fedor vs. Lesnar next!?

Affliction has canceled its Trilogy event! Fedor Emelianenko was to fight Josh Barnett on Aug. 1 in Anaheim, but Affliction canceled the show after Barnett tested positive for steroids and couldn't get a license to fight. Affliction has now folded and will be a promoter in the UFC now.

This means the UFC will have its pick of Affliction fighters to give exclusive contracts to, including former Heavy-Weight title holders, Tim Sylvia and Andrei Arlovski.

Will Fedor finally now be coming to the UFC? Dana White has already said if he signs Fedor he automatically gets a shot at Brock Lesnar for the title in his first fight! Everybody's dream fight might soon happen! Dana White has called a MAJOR press conference on July 31st where he said UFC will be announcing some huge changes and some great news.

Please please please let this happen. I wanna see Brock's ego get knocked down a few notches. Fedor would wipe the cage up with Brock:goodjob:. Don't believe that, just wait. It will happen one of these days.

So far there's not a high chance of this happening. M-1 Global wants a co-promotion with the UFC in order for Fedor to fight for them, and that's not going to happen.

True. However if you keep up with the MMA business world you know Dana usually figures out a way to get what he wants. It will eventually happen.

Dana doesn't really want Fedor. Most real MMA fans know Fedor is the shit. However those fans make up a small portion of the UFC fanbase. The casual fan doesn't know or give a shit about Fedor. He's not really marketable (not yet), and Dana really doesn't have a reason to seriously pursue him.

Fedor is a cash cow. Bringing him to the UFC would be great for the business. He knows that as well. Why else would he have already stirred up shit between them. Brock is a cash cow also. No one thought Brock would have became a monster in the UFC, especially after his first fight. Dana got him for the celebrity factor and the money maker he knew he would be.

Fedor is not a cash cow. You and I know he's a badass, there's no question. But, the majority of the UFC fans have no idea who he is. So, right now he's not really marketable. If he were to join the UFC, then Dana could spin the marketing wheel and everyone would know who he is. However, right now thats not the case.

To explain this statement so it doesn't sound like I'm being an ass. Imagine how many more hardcore MMA fans that would never purchace a UFC PPV that would watch Fedor vs. Lesnar. Like you said most real MMA fans really could care less about the UFC. They keep up with it but they don't go out of their way to watch it. Most hardcore MMA fans like myself never watch a UFC ppv unless someone like KenFlo, Demian Maia, GSP, etc actually has a good fight. (personal examples)

Fedor makes an extreme amount outside of UFC and could retire today and never have to work another day in his life. But ironchef is right, the rest of the world knows Fedor well, but not the U.S. However, Fedor does have such a loyal following with the die-hard MMA fans that Dana White has to seriously consider bringing Fedor into the UFC (which he has tried and failed to do on multiple occasions). Affliction did such a good job marketing Fedor that many U.S. fans are starting to know who he is now... The Last Emperor.

Trust me more people know Fedor than you would think. Plus just one, hour long show on Spike promoting the fight between Fedor and Lesnar and it would be the biggest fight of the year.

Hey it would kickass but Fedor is in talks to do other fights as well, including the scheduled Josh Barnett fight even still sometime in August since Barnett's license was revoked, but he is not suspended. That will still be a great fight. Barnett is the same size as Lesnar but with even bigger hands.

ufc hasn't ACQUIRED anything. affliction has merely given in to their sponsorship terms and will now be allowed back in ufc as a paying sponsor.

in the meanwhile, this doesn't have any direct bearing on fedor seeing as how he's still under m-1 management, which was completely separate from affliction.

ok my bad, i must have read something wrong while i was reading all this news yesterday

M-1 Global needs to recognize that the UFC will never let them co-sponsor an event and that they will not give Fedor a 1 fight deal, just to let him win the UFC Heavy-Weight Title and walk off into the sunset...

However, with Bodog Fight, the World Fighting Alliance, the International Fight League, Elite XC, and other promotions folding and going bankrupt there doesn't leave Fedor a huge window of opportunity to go fight formidable opponents now that Affliction crumbled along with its stacked Heavy-Weight division, whose fighters' contracts now belong to the UFC. Eventually Fedor will be in the UFC, maybe the UFC and M-1 can finally get over their differences and get something rolling...

As an avid fan of MMA i would say this. Fedor is the greatest fighter out there to date. Honestly Brock Lesnar is in no comparison to what Fedor has done and should not even be in the same sentence really. Just because he is UFC's heavy weight champion doesn't mean shit to the world. But if Brock were to fight Fedor, he would lose utterly bad. Remember, Fedor can take punches, as he has proven and still submit anyone or take them out punching back

fedor has won against former ufc champions yes, but not all of them were at their peak either when he beat them (i mean come on, have you seen the boxing knockout of tim sylvia recently? shit is embarrassing). i still want to see him take on brock and mir and maybe even couture.

When he fought Fedor he pretty much was at his peak.

Brock is really the only one who can offer much of a challenge to Fedor.

Mir not so much. Fedor is stronger, faster, and smarter. His ground game is equal to if not better than Mir, and his ground and pound is way more vicious. His standing strikes are much better as well.

Pretty much the same story for Couture. Just about the only thing Couture could do better than Fedor is wrestling, but Fedor has beaten olympic caliber wrestlers before, so it won't be anything new.

americanctm
07-28-2009, 05:08 PM
If you think Sylvia is past his prime (which when he fought Fedor he was still ranked as a top 10 heavyweight in the world) how would Randy Couture be able to handle him??? Couture is 46 years old and only has 1 fight left on his UFC contract, so he'll probably retire again after this. Fedors last two fights have been against top 10 heavyweights.

Fedor will never fight in the UFC. He has a greater desire to support his country and friends. He's not a member of M1, he's the co-owner. He's not going to abandon his business partners, friends and country to prove himself to UFC fans. Truth is, he has nothing to prove. He can retire tomorrow and be the best MMA fighter ever. It's just not going to happen. It's a real shame too, Fedor seems like a nice guy and a lot of people are abusing his kindness to make a living. Alexander gave an interview expressing his opinions about Fedor's management abusing his kindness and using him.
UFC is too smart to jeopardize their business for 1 fighter. M1 copromoted with Bodog, they went out of business. M1 copromoted with Affliction, they went out of business.... enough said.

M-1 has nothing to do with those promotions going out of business. Bodog was a terrible promotion that never stood a chance of doing anything good. Affliction had a chance, but it decided to grossly overpay its fighters and hinge its entire operations on Fedor's back.

I agree completely with both of you about Fedor. He is not willing to sour friendships and abandon his country and his fans around the world other than in the U.S. to "prove himself" in the UFC. I just hope his manager gets wise and doesn't insist on co-promoting the event with the UFC and allowing his fighter to get payed very well and get huge publicity for the remaining fans to see in the U.S. for the promotion of his UFC fights

eh... M1 did have a factor in the pay scale. People viewed fighting Fedor as a lottery ticket. I believe Matt Lindland even got 400k for fighting Fedor under the Bodog banner. Most fighters that Fedor faced after pride were fighting for about 2-3x their normal pay scale. UFC underpays... but Fedor's established pay scale is too much.

article from cnnsi.com

Denying a published report Tuesday by the Los Angeles Times, M-1 Global officials told SI.com that Fedor Emelianenko and the Ultimate Fighting Championship are not close to finalizing a deal that would bring mixed martial arts' top heavyweight in the Octagon.
"I can give you a guarantee it's not accurate," said Apy Echteld of M-1 Global, a St. Petersburg, Russia-based promotion and management company of which Emelianenko is an equity stakeholder.
According to the Times' report -- which referenced an unnamed source unaffiliated with the UFC and "with information about the negotiations" -- UFC president Dana White was set to announce the signing of Emelianenko on Friday. The source also said negotiations between the top MMA promoter and the Russian champion's camp were "very civil," and that both groups were discussing details on the pending public announcement.
Echteld declined to comment on negotiations between M-1 Global and the UFC, which are rumored to be taking place Tuesday in Los Angeles. He pointed to a press conference Wednesday in Anaheim, Calif., for "important" news on Emelianenko's fate.

Vegas is projecting Fedor around -200 vs Lesnar. I'll be selling everything i own to bet on that fight. Realistic Fedor vs Lesnar odds should be around -900.

For you nonbetting folks... for comparison. Anderson was -1500 vs Cote.
