Where my Ipod can be fixed??

My 30g video Ipod was working good, one day when I connect to my computer said, "usb device not recognized"
I have tried 80g video Ipod on same computer, was working as it should be.
Mine plays good, it charges but can not connect to computer.
I took it to apple store, they want me to recycle this for 20 some bux. WTF
Is there anyway I can fix this without recycling at apple store??
