But not on the bike. My buddy I just met saturday night took his Ducati monster up there and crashed it. Had to go up there and pick him up. He's ok, the bike is fixable.

I def want to go to the mtns this coming weekend though if anyone else is down. We went to Dahlonega (sp). I dont know where you guys go.

if you go, be careful, leave your ego at home. dont go riding over your head. Last thing we need is more people crashing up there.

you were probably on this road picking up your buddy who crashed.

Hey Hondatwin, I am to the east of you in Covington, Salem road. I am a newbie and looking for people to ride with. Carbs getting cleaned so hopefully I can ride this weekend.

Dazn-none of those roads. your first vid was the main road in correct? If you go past that lodge or whatever on the right hand side, you go another mile or 2 on the right there is another road. You go up the mtn then back down. It was a very steep grade with a gradual right but he just made a vital mistake somewhere.

Don't worry about the ego thing. I just wanna go up there and cruise around and learn a little bit. I dont have full leathers yet.

It can be a great, fun learning experience...but crashes happen.
Right before we left Tuners Corner, I did advise Clayton to ride his own pace and forget what everyone else is doing....but in the end, he panicked, and did everything he wasn't suppose to....he fixated instead of looking through the turn, then saw that he was going wide, grabbed front and rear brakes in the lean, and ended up sliding into the ditch. For the most part, he got lucky, no on-coming traffic, and there was a nice ditch filled with mud to soften his impact. And this turn was a nice sweeper, nothing tricky about it. Worst of his injury was that burn on his leg from the motor. Hope he's feeling better.....I feel bad for him.

Yes sir. He is VERY lucky. He is a great guy, super nice and just all smiles all the time. His bike IS fixable, it wont start. They are waiting for me to go to their house to tinker with it.

With Dazn, hell last riding season just about every time I was up there someone got hurt and some folks even got killed.

Leathers even if your not planning on riding hard is still a great idea.

Def. got to be careful, and watchful for those around you (thinks of Repsol guy lol).

We should ride to amacola(check spelling)Amicalola doesn't have any good roads! It's a boring drive to it either way you go...unless you're in a rally car taking the dirt roads lol!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oa9EGcpa420&feature=related

He crashed near the 1:00 mark.On Richard B. Russell/348? There's probably loose gravel all over that road from people dropping a wheel on the inside. It's not exactly bike friendly because of it lol!

The 60-180-129-19 loop is one of the best routes and you can chill at the TWO in Suches. 180 extension towards Unicoi/75 to Helen is a fun run too. Then most go back to 129 via Richard B. Russell.

Richard Russell is a great road for bikes. one of my favorites in North GA. There is loose gravel in the winter when it gets cold enough to snow. and you will get ice at the top and some crazy fuckers climbing the ice wall but gravel is nothing to worry about in the summer. Ive ridden it hundreds of times and never had an issue. Never seen anyone crash there due to gravel. awesome road, eats your tires too. not many roads that can make your tires ball up like a track.
the only roads that I worry about gravel is 60 north from dales(two or three corners that almost always has gravel) and 180.

and yes, stay on the Loop. do not stray from the Loop. There are no other good roads up there. Only the Loop. Dont even think about going anywhere else. :D

i dont even recommend going up to the mountains until you are 100% comfortable with your bike and basic instinctual controls.
if you really think you are ready and you have all your gear, pm me,i will shoot you some awesome roads to ride. But if there is even a doubt, then get more seat time. Its too easy to get killed up there, even with a tiny mistake. and even if you think you are going slow. I had a Harley rider die in my arms last year, he was only going 30-40mph,but went off the side of the road and broke his neck. It really doesnt take much, you have to realize how frail our bodies are compared to a tree, a cliff, the ground after a 20foot drop, or a car.

Russell with a new mix I'm 100% positive there is gravel on it in places year round. That's why that road eats up tires so because of the mixture is eroding itself, too much gravel mix and not enough tar...then having near flat shoulders on both sides with gravel the cars tend to drop a wheel. I'm mostly talking about the middle near a couple of the look outs though. From the cliff to 180 is fine and from the last lookout to 75 tends to be ok...it's the center portion, particularly one sweeping turn on one of the hills always has gravel.

Yes, zero chicken strips with balls of rubber on not just the rear tire but the front too is good

If you go north on Hwy. 60 in Suches past the T.W.O. on the left and 180/Dales on your right it's a great 5 minute run to Gaddistown to heat your tires up for 180 (is this where you are talking about loose gravel in 3 turns?)...or you can continue 25 miles to Morganton and Blue Ridge Lake but the roads are BORING from there. Best bet is to turn around and head back to Suches and get back on the main loop.

I have a detailed figure 8 loop I wrote with mileage, landmarks, and maps in PDF form that I may post up. I just REALLY don't like making it available to people that aren't comfortable on those roads. Especially those in cars!

It really doesnt take much, you have to realize how frail our bodies are compared to a tree, a cliff, the ground after a 20foot drop, or a car.Video after video I've seen people brake in a turn on a bike and high side it. If it's a left turn they're going into the guard rail or trees and there bike is cart wheeling or sliding shortly behind them. In a right turn it's going to put the rider into oncoming traffic or slide across and into the guardrail or trees. Anything is possible around any turn and there is nothing forgiving about a bike. Inexperienced riders don't know how to react to situations in the mountains. If it wasn't for me racing mountain bikes before I got on a motorcycle I'm sure I would have layed one down on the street. Luckily it made me comfortable sliding on 2 wheels when unexpected things happen, even though a motorcycle weighs over 10 times what my full suspension mountain bike did.

It's Amicola lol http://www.gastateparks.org/

I went up a couple of weekends ago. I led Nitro and some friends up trey mountain, then cut across 180 to hit blood mountain a few times. but going on 180 about half way Nitro's throttle cable snapped. So we stayed on the side of 180 in the woods for about 2 hours trying to fix it. But we eventually rigged it to get his bike back to my house since i'm the closest to the mountains til he came and got it the next day. if i can get some gas money up id be down. I do go fast tho. not as fast as some but pretty fast from what i have been told by others.

and yes, the parts of 60 that have gravel is closer to dales than morganton. The one in particular I always think of is the off camber right hander after a quick set of esses. 60 is an awesome road all the way to morganton. There are a lot of great sweepers all the way to morganton. there are a lot of straights in between, but the run up to morganton is worth it. after morganton you could always do a run up Tellico plains, and then in the Skyway. tons of spectacular roads in TN and NC.
60 north

Ive got some of tellico I am editing right now.

There is no need to "heat" your tires up for 180. your on a straightaway and non-twisty stuff for a good while before you even hit the fun stuff.

speaking of good stuff, this road is on my top 3.
