i think it would depend on the amount of pressure in relation to the thickness of the steel/welds

How much pressure would be in the tank? about 200 psi? Yes, it's possible. What dimensions are you looking at.?

How about using nitrogen with it? Higher pressure but lower volume so less of it meaning smaller mass.

well its for my air bags on my truck. i have two compressors that fill it so nitrogen would not be possible.Nitrogen can be compressed from 3000 to 5000psi (depending on tank) vs. your 150-200psi...so no compressor needed and works so much faster.

I'd still use a engine mounted compressor for normal daily use though.

Simple answer is yes you can. It has been done over and over. It is not the steel and the welds that cannot hold the pressure, as long as the welds are good. The problem with most homemade tanks are the fittings used. Use good quality fittings and make sure you weld the nuts to the tank good. :goodjob:

air can also be compressed past 5000 psi,

but if you want to blow out your bags go a head,

the n2 has a smaller volume so when it expands from the 5k but by the time it runs through the lines and fills up all the space into your bags, it might be 120psi
