E85!! Why or Why Not!!

i am in the process of building a or 2.0L gsr motor. i am going for 550 to 600whp. it is not a daily driver.. but i was thinking about e85... what you guys think... i know that i am need more fun to run e85 with high horsepower cars.. or should i just run race gas or water/methonal....

E85 is fine, just make sure you have the fuel system to handle it. What is your setup?

#1 availability. good luck finding it at a random gas station if you street the car.
#2 make sure your ENTIRE fuel system is prepped for e85.. its highy corrosive and eats typical rubber lines etc. Need to make sure everything in your car is e85 safe including fuel pump, all lines and even your injectors/o-rings and everything in between.
#3 tune. iirc, it takes 33% more e85 to produce the equivalent power as gasoline, meaning your injectors have got to be much larger than would typically required for your power goals with gasoline. plus larger injectors can sometimes cause idle problems but really depends on your tune.

If i were to want to run e85 i would most def have a ems that allows for dual maps so i could switch to 93octane if i had to in a jam.

For modern automobiles, I don't agree with this being as great a concern. There are a few guys who have been running it religiously without issue for quite some time now.

The bigger concern is having enough injector space. You will need to run 30% more fuel than you would.

On the flipside, you can run some fairly aggressive timing as e85 is pretty knock resistant.

A couple of issues to be wary of though. First, the injectors tend to "gum up" over time. The theory is that it has to do with the quality of the fuel itself. Some is just dirtier than others.
The other issue is oil contamination. Because you have to run 30% more than 91oct, it has been known to make your oil smell sweet. This is not good. To counter this, you will need to change your oil and filter a little more frequently.

Sure flex fuel vehicles are fine with e85, but any car that a b-series engine is going in is going to have an older style fuel system. If i were building a 500+whp car, i would make absolutely sure im not going to have a fueling issue caused by this. Its to cheap to replace the fuel system compared to running lean or having a leak.

And you're either going to suffer huge drops in power to maintain the same gas mileage, or pump a lot more fuel through to make more power.

That is your engine management. Now what about fuel system? You want to make 550-600whp on E85, what are you going to use for pump(s), injectors, lines, etc.?
