I don't think it will reduce that many connections. They will still have a connection with the software layer, just not be able to query as much. That being said, most of the "connections" that you would and will lose are bot's and spiders. Those types of connections will not be useful to you. The one downside I do see to force registration will that it will limit google from spidering and indexing the entire site for the serps. I usually recommend that small forums and sites don't require registration because it could reduce potential members. IA however is well past that point and people will be more than willing to register to vote. I think it will actually increase the amount of members and new registrations.

I'm a perfect example of this, joined March of '06, i have less than 220 posts, but ive logged in a few times a week every week since. Its like every1 says make some of the most popular sections open, ppl get hooked and sign up for the sake of finding out whats in the other sections. just my :2cents:.
