i'm in the process of rebuilding my d16z6 for my 94 civic. b4 it crapped out on me...i remember my vtec not kicking in like it was suppose to
first - acts like it's suppose to
seconds - feels like it's jumping in an out
third - doesn't even seem like it's even there
(i don't even try in 4th or 5th)

would this be b/c my vtec solinoid is not working properly?...or is there something else that could be wrong?....and also if it is my solinoid...will my car be able to run with a bad solinoid as long as i don't engage vtec (since after the rebuild i can't push it past 3k rpms for 2k miles)???

well since the solinoid is what engages v-tec i would stay away from it till you find the problem because if it not the selinoid and is something else you prob shouldn be in/out v-tec anyway, solinoid 4 sale 50$ off a y8 98,000 miles, have complete head

clean or replace filter
check wiring to ecu and to ground
check oil pressure engine
check oil pressure switch on the solenoid

On a single cam, it's hard to hear the vtec engage. Clean the filter inside the pressure switch and check wiring. Also, Jump the Solenoid to the battery to make sure its working. G/L

First things first, how is your engine oil level? The solenoid doesn't know what gear you're in. You can apply 12v+ to the solenoid to test it manually. Id be willing to bet the solenoid isn't the problem.

um...its not as loud as the the DOHC vtec...but SOHC vtec is noisy....atleast mine is..i can hear my vtec crossover over loud music...
