View Full Version : Power Mods Custom Intake Question
TRD tC

I got a question for you guys.
I was planning to get a TRD intake for my 09' tC, but money has been short lately. With that said, I'm thinking about just making my own intake with those custom intake pipes they sell at Autozone, Pepboys, etc. I looked at my intake piping on my car, and i think i only need to replace the air box with a straight pipe for the filter and air sensor. If I do this, is there a chance of my motor running dangerously lean/rich? Is the stock rubber/plastic pipes okay to couple with the metal pipes? I've never had an intake system on my cars before, so I'm new to this stuff. Any help will be greatly appreciated :goodjob:
Also, I don't care about squeezing every little hp/tq out of this engine. Just want to get better flow and sound for my daily driver.

You won't see much if any gains from it, especially in summer weather...but it will make a cool noise. If you like the sound of sucking lol!
You aren't going to run too rich or too lean, the compute can compensate for slight adjustments in air.

Thanx for the advice! Reps given
I was just afraid of blowing up a car that i still owe payments on... for almost 5 more years. lol. Like I said, I don't care about squeezing every little horsepower out of it. I looked up a lot of intake systems for my car, and that'll be my guide for filter placement. I was just worried about the air/fuel ratio and the rubber/plastic/metal hybrid piping.
Anyone else have any input?

you might as well just get a K&N drop in air filter, OR get a ebay intake and get a good filter on there.

Yeah, I got the K&N drop in filter right now, but I want a bit more.
I guess an eBay with good filter is a good way to go.
So you guys think the cheaper intake systems won't make my engine run lean/rich?
Anyone think I should just cough up the money for a TRD intake? Is there a huge difference?

dont do that, all intakes are the same, the only thing that makes a difference is the filter. most of the time your paying for the name brand.

lol. No. I got my tC cause it was cheap, and I love Toyotas. Like I said, I don't care about squeezing every drop of hp/tq from this car. I definitely am not one of those tC owners who think stock tCs are high performance vehicles that can beat everything.:lmfao:
After I pay this car off, and my credit gets better from it, I plan to get a Genesis Coupe for the racing :goodjob: . Not that I race...

I found a Fujita intake for my car on eBay. It throws out the idea of custom intake, but its still half the price of a TRD system.. lol.

You'll find quality shit here.
Either brand new or used from other Scion owners and not to mention if you have any other questions tC-related, you'll get a better answer and some more input.
Just my .02
Either way, just save up and get a CAI or a SRI that'll be worth it.
You skimp on parts, you'll end up kicking yourself in the ass later.
And if you want a cool sound, just a get a axleback and call it a day.

Just being honest here, don't waste your money. You won't notice any difference and will just let more particles in your engine.
A/f ratios are going to be adjusted for whatever your car is seeing. It won't default lean or anything like that with a filter. It will try to keep it at 14.7 by adjusting your short term and long term fuel trims.
