View Full Version : HELP - Driveshaft Hum

After playing around with a friend in a parking lot doing some drifting type stuff, my car started making a weird noise. I'm not positive it's the driveshaft but that's what it sounds like. Under engine braking and especially during coasting the hum becomes very pronounced, and you can feel a slight vibration if you put your hand on the tunnel just behind the e-brake.
any ideas?

nothing... well for anyone who's slightly mechanically inclined, it's gotten louder and sounds as though it's just behind and underneath the e-brake, there's a big O thing where the two half's of the driveshaft bolt up inside it before going on back to the LSD.
Although a friend of mine suggested it could be my ring and pinion in the diff that's worn out on the coasting side which is why it's so loud when there's no load...
It'd be nice if someone could give me an idea of what to look for down there...

look for anything that appears to be damaged or broken in any way, shape, or form, also, that humming noise somtimes is the result of small animals singing the sugar plum fairy while using your drive shaft as a tread mill.

could be a lot of things... but most likely it's either U-joints or the center support bearing (the big "O" ;)). basically put the car in gear and pull the ebrake up. slide under the car and try to wobble the driveshaft side to side/up and down and twist it with your hands. you'll be able to immediately tell if the u-joints have gone bad or the support bearing.

To late... whatever it was broke last night around ten when I put the car in 1st after backing out of a parking space. Very very loud clunking now.
Guess I'll have it taken to a shop in a bit.

Still not sure, I can't afford a tow truck at the moment and my friends have gotten around to getting the car with their trailer yet. So it's been sitting behind a popular building off Barrett parkway since Saturday at 9pm. I hope to god it hasn't been towed.
