2nd Gear grind?

So Im driving my moms 95 Ford Escort LX to work and back, and its about a 30 minute commute, and its alot better on gas than my jeep, But recently I have noticed a grind going from 1st to second, ESPECIALLY downshifting into 2nd, and it does it pretty much every shift that involves 2nd now, its really embarassing and I have to force it into the gear in order for it to get in there. A friend told me it might be the Gear Synchros and said it could be pretty costly to repair, but im not quiet sure, so Im asking here, anyone know or think they know what it could possibly be? Except the fact that its a ford? XD
