Ok so some of ya know ive been on the car hunt for months now. And im trying to decide betoween a few cars now. Im just trying to get something reliable, get rid of my tahoe, and something that i can do some simple work to. I have a few cars picked out, but im looking for opinions and help. At first i was thinkin an S2k but i dont think i want one just because of the fact that I need something that is gonna have more then 2 seats! so my choices as of right now are 00-04 IS300, 05ish Volkswagon Jetta JTI. IF theres any cars out there that are in the right price range (about 10k) that anyone knows of thats sporty and reliable. Let me know. ID still love to have the lexus but it all just depends on if i can find the right one.. anywho if ya'll can help lemme know.

You could take a look at a WRX in that price range if you do a little shopping around, that gets you into the AWD turbo game, where simple mods such as an exhaust and a protune can net considerable gains. 4 doors, good styling, and distinctive sound are all pluses as well. You could also go a completely different route and check out some LS1 camaros, mustang GT's or the like.

I have seen EVO's for under 10k also. SRT-4's are a lot of fun and under 10k also.

Id love an Evo.. dont really care much for the neon. down here evo's are hard to find under 17k. and if they are there all ragged out and have like 150k on them! i dunno.. i need to find something soon though! im goin nuts with this shit!

Gas mileage on a WRX would be about the same as an IS300's, I would think. A Scion TC is a good car, if you can afford all of the techno cd's and neon lighting. If you aren't up for a WRX, save a little money and get an older 2.5RS, those cars are sweet, I want one so bad.
Oh yeah, props on GIR in your profile pic.

The IS300 from what I've heard doesn't get the greatest mpg in the world, I think okra is probably right that the wrx would be just as efficient if not better.

If it's around the same price, I'd go WRX, the Evos still run way too much money, they are a lot more than a WRX. The IS300 is a great car, no doubt, but ~210hp in a car that's just as heavy as the other two with a 3L V6, it won't be nearly as fast (though RWD would be pretty fun), and it is a ton of work to get the good 2JZ that you would really want in the thing (or to turn it into an RS200, which would be really great). It's hard to find an IS300 manual anyway. The WRX is going to have a manual and it's going to be fun out of the box, plus they sound so damn sweet, I'm going to look at Subaru porn now.

Prelude?....Sporty, reliable, has more than 2 seats, under 10k or maybe an RSX?

Not really a prelude fan.. though they are sweet cars. and the RSX type S would be the only way id go, but im not really if id want one. The IS300 is just a car ive always wanted. Im not really trying to make it killer fast. but i want something i can work on and have fun with. the WRX is a great car. but im still not sure if there for me. im gonna see if i can find one to test drive. i wanna see if they are for me! I dunno. i feel like im about to pull my hair out trying to figure out what i want and stuff. Ive found a few is300's that are manual trans though. oh and ive taken a look. is the wrx sti 6speed or 5? and how reliable are they truly? anywho thanks for all the tips guys. ill make my choice soon..

wrx is a 5-speed, sti is a 6-speed. the sti transmission and engine can both be swapped into a wrx fairly easily. reliability is all up to you. what do you want to do with it? if you are fairly conservative on the mods it will last as long as you want it to. start making a lot of power and you will start breaking a lot of shit, just the same as any other car. The wrx responds VERY well to bolt ons though, and the boxer engine makes a lot of torque as compared to most inline 4's.

I believe that the STI's transmission is a Getrag too, so it is really reliable, but STIs are running for way too much money, they always seem to run around $20k.

The swap from the wrx to the sti is pretty easy. You need to get an automatic tranny driveshaft from the same year subie for it to fit.

If not, a wrx isn't going to handle a good amount of power to the tranny. About 260-280 i've always read is the limit for the stock wrx transmission.

But then again, it doesn't sound like the cars that you're talking about are going to be faster than 260 at the wheel, so you shouldn't have to worry.
