So I just got my E46 a few weeks ago at a dealer sale and it had a clunking in the rear end of the car when I bought it so I just thought it was a bushing. Well come to find out it was a busing that went bad but also part of the left rear suspension busted through the frame "its not the shock and spring part of the suspension, its another part that lies more on the undercarrage of the car rather than in the wheel well. That's the best way for me to describe the location of it". I took it to a body shop and they said it would cost $1700 to fix. So basicaly I just told the dealership that ran the car throught the dealer sale that we bought it from what I just explained and they are looking at the car and seeing what they can do as I speak. Ultimately I want to keep my bimmer so I want the dealership to split the cost to fix 50/50. If not that I'll try to get them to take it back because they sold me a car with a major malfunction with out announcing it had that problem which all frame damaged cars must be announced at the auction to the potention buyers and if they just say its my problem to deal with "which I'm expecting" I'm just gonna run the car through a dealer sale and hope I get back what I paid for the car. So yay or nay for the Mustang GT?
PS: Sorry for the long read, but I had to explain what happened to the car and why Im getting rid of it.

BTW: having owned a 99 stang and an e46 you are going to notice the mustang is a very raw car with poor handling and crappy finish compared to the e46.

How well do those 4.6's respond to a better camshaft? Because I know some american V8's respond really well to them like an extra 25-50 horsepower.

Get one, but do 3.73 gears (if it's manual, 4.10's if it's auto) FIRST.
Then, piece together a supercharger kit. Mustangforums had a write-up on piecing one together, find a cheap head unit and then just buy the accessories from the company. Mustangs stock come with 2.73s and optional 3.08s, so the gears help a lot. Also, get a pro 5.0 shifter. If you want it to handle better, a set of shocks and springs will help; just cutting my springs helped... they tend to sit pretty high, giving a high center of gravity.

I say go for it, and Evan is correct on this, gears will net you a very considerable gain with minimal downside. Worst case scenario, you end up not liking it and you can just turn around and sell it. There is always a good market for mustangs, so the car will be easy to flip if you do well proven mods that everyone considers a good base to go from. There is no replacement for displacement as well, the torque of a V8 makes them a hell of a lot of fun. The sound is fantastic as well. The only real downsides you need to take into consideration are the fit and finish aren't even close to the BMW, and the handling will probably need to be addressed to compare to what you are used to.

I think I got my mind made up and I'm gonna get a mustang. I mean I babied my E46 because I knew it had a problem that needed to be fixed when I bought the car so at least when I get the mustang I wont really have anything to miss handling wise because I never got to experience the good handling of a E46 because I babied mine. I think I'm just gonna get the eibach suspension kit that lowers the stang 1.5" front and rear, magnaflow or flowmaster exhaust, CAI or RAI, 3.73 gears, and drop a big cam in it w/a tune and I'll call it a day for the mustang performance wise. I mean I'd like to SC the stang, but it'll be my dd and I dont want to put up the the trouble a forced induction car can cause so I'm just gonna leave it normally aspirated.

If you must trade for a mustang, then the 01 GT's are the best rated by consumer reports (my dad was shopping around for them).
But think about this... you are talking about a blower, suspension, exhaust, gears, etc etc etc on the mustang. Take the money you would spend on that crap and fix the e46 and lightly mod it. Bimmer > mustang any day.

Mach 1 FTMFW!
Bullitt's are cool but overpriced for what you get.
The only issue with the 99-01 4.6 GT's are that the Windsor heads tend to blow plugs out... there is a fix for that.
Don't listen to Evan on shifters... MGW > Pro5.0
Do listen to Evan on getting a gear. 3.73, 4.10, or 4.30 depending on how much highway driving you do.
O/R X and catback are a necessity, if you do go O/R you will need MIL eliminators though, which are getting harder to find... however if your good with wiring/soldering you can make your own.
If you get one with a full plastic intake (ie: no aluminum coolant crossover) it WILL crack, just a matter of when.
2v's love boost.
Mach 1's put down VERY impressive numbers at the track with very little money, ask me how I know.
If you can afford a Terminator, do it. I personally would rather have a Mach than a 99 or 01 Cobra though.
If you can afford a 00 Cobra R... I hate you.
Any other questions feel free to PM me.

Best info posted yet!!
4.10 or better. Don't fear the gear.
Def. MGW!!
If you can afford it the Mach 1's are tough to beat with there 4v's. You will pretty much be a full second ahead of a GT in the 1/4 straight out of the box.

Honestly, I would own a 2v... or any N/A Mustang without at LEAST a 4.10 gear... I prefer 4.30, 4.10 still has GREAT highway manners, don't let anyone lie to you.

Dude, I bet you'd like the BMW a lot more than a mustang if you could get the dealership to pay for the repairs. Even if you had to pay for the repairs, it'd be worth it.

BTW its CAMS not CAM. You will be buying 2 or 4 cams depending on the model 4.6 you end up with.
My friend has a '99 Mustang with a DOHC Navigator 5.4 in it. Its fast. When he is spraying its much faster.

I would never trust a seller that claims 330HP and high 10's low 11's in the same sentence. Keep looking, you won't regret it.
