1999 Acura TL - EGR Valve Needs to be Cleaned

Title says it all. I have no idea where to start. I have been told that these valves can be clogged with carbon, causing the engine light to come on.

To locate the EGR valve I have to remove my intake. I also been told its only like a 10-15 minute job and it's real easy however I don't want to really do it myself.

Anybody interested in helping me out? If the job is done there is some cash involved. :goodjob: Hit me up with a PM.

It's a pretty simple job, however tricky if you don't know the shortcuts. You remove the EGR tube on the back of the engine near the firewall, and use a sharpened bolt with a slit cut in one side to reach down in the EGR port and dig out the carbon. Takes around 20-30 minutes if you know what you're doing.

for the 99s, the code should be EGR Insufficient flow..

FIrst remove all the plastic covers, then there will be a collection of 12mm nuts/bolts right in the middle of the enigne holding the upper and lower intake. remove those and as you lift up the upper intake remove any plugs or vaccum hoses keeping it from coming up, once you can see inside of the runners, if you look towards the throttle body side of things youll notice a little hole with carbon down in it and you can use a screw driver to push down in the hole to clear up the carbon blockage, then use a wire pipe cleaner to clean out both the whole in the lower part of the intake and in the upper..

ahhh shit, you're right dammit. I'm thinking of the 96-98 or a 96-04 RL. my bad! either way, the 99-up TL's are even easier!

Appreciate the responses...Yea its a 1999 like MidLifeCrisis clarified and yup the code is reading "EGR Insufficient Flow". Seems like its clogged with carbon but the car is running just fine. I think my MPG went down because of this.

I really don't think I am the right person to do this type of job even though 100s told me the job is easy.

Is it a 4cyl or V6? When I was at Honda, this happened all the time on the V6 Accords and Odysseys. We always just replaced the EGR valve. But if you decide to clean it, make sure you get a new gasket. It will ruin itself upon removal. We also did a tube mod. After removing the upper intake manifold, the EGR port was drilled out and we inserted a special tube in it. Something about it didnt allow carbon to stick to it.

It's a v6. Yea, seems like 193971293 people have the same problem as me. Do you happen to what kind of tube that was? I would like to have that in mines to prevent this problem from occurring again.

Just got off the phone with acura and they have told me the 99's have a 8year/ 80000 mile warranty on the EGR. I have 100500 miles on my baby. I was denied. DAMMIT.

My ex's TL had this problem. Her's was an '03. I pulled the EGR off and used a pipe cleaner rod and drill. Fixed it once and for all. Best way to keep this from coming back on, get on it at least once a week.

Okay...found out that the pipes were not clogged but note I never disassembled the engine so I can't really tell however I had the car retested and found out it was an electrical problem with the actual valve (Code: P1491). So I took a look at it, took out the cable plugged it back and the engine light was gone.

Took it to emissions the next day and I passed with flying colors!

BUT...found out that I need to replace the water pump and timing belt. The car overheated in Buckhead. Found out that the water pump was leaking on the timing belt which is not a good sign. Coolant was also leaking from the car.

It happens to all j series often i have had it before....in fact honda sells a kinda like BIG BORE KIT for the whole assembly that is a bigger hole
