View Full Version : Someone please explain how a roof rack became "cool"
StreetHazard

I see people with roof racks talking JDM this and JDM that and in the same breath diss cars with wide body kits and crazy paint and call them "rice"
I can understand roof racks being a "west coast" thing because maybe they can shove a surfboard up there, or a lowrider bicycle (which is pretty fucking gay as well) but I can understand if it had some functionality.
But in georgia? really? WTF do people do with it?

Bike racks that aren't used for their intended purpose, on ANY car, equals fail.
I don't see how a bike rack adds to the asthetic value of a car....not to mention that whole trend is far from "jdm".
They do whatever they want b/c it's their car.

It doesn't have to add to the aesthetic value -- it's THEIR car.
Hell there isn't much other than paint that adds the aesthetic value of car but people still cram shit onto and into their car.
Personal preference.
And sometimes it's NOT personal preference... people are so unoriginal that they copy the personal preference of OTHER people who are more original than they are.

I would put a bike rack on my car if it was capable to have one. Oh and it was be used for what it is intended to do, transport my mountain bike from one place to another.
people are so unoriginal that they copy the personal preference of OTHER people who are more original than they are.
Which we call it "JDM".

I don't understand how it's JDM? What's JDM about it? Don't get me wrong, I like the JDM goodies but if you were to look through a Option magazine or something, I doubt you'd see a lot of people sporting roof racks.

To each his or her, yes. I agree with that completely however, I am entitled to my opinion and my opinion is that bike racks, more often times than not, are an eyesore and detract from the overall look of a car....
I'm also of the opinion that a bike rack does not aid in performance and is also an asinine addition to an automobile if it is not being used for what yakima, thule, etc designed their products for...

If you don't use it to transport bikes, it is lame. Getting a bike rack for the look of it is like having a NOS bottle in your trunk with the lines leading nowhere.

^ Hey turd. A bike rack isn't just used for a bike to be transported. And I don't think anyone calls their roof rack JDM. It's just happens to be on a lot of Hondas.
And it may be a fad or something but maybe people just realized a bike rack looks good on most cars and it's cooler to carry something on a rack than a trunk.

but why can you say "its their car, they can do what they want with it"
then say "btw wide body kits on hondas=fail"?
"In classical logic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Classical_logic), a contradiction consists of a logical incompatibility between two or more propositions (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proposition). It occurs when the propositions, taken together, yield two conclusions (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Logical_consequence) which form the logical inversions of each other."

that is so obvious its almost not worth commenting, we all know that is its intended use.

Maybe I should start leaving my tire-tail on even when i'm not transporting tires. But hey, who knows, I might not even use the tire-tail to transport tires..eventhough that's all that will fit on it
So if someone with a coupe/sedan is using their bike rack to luggage, then WTF are they putting in their trunk?
I kinda agree with the OP, i've seen quite a number of cars "sporting" a bike rack with no bike on it...why not just tote around a trailer that's empty..i mean..there will be times when you'll be using the trailer..but just leave it on when you're not using it because you *could* be using it.

Yes, as a matter of fact, the one and only lowered import with a roof rack i have EVER personally winessed did have one of those so called items strapped to it.
Even if it didn't, I don't think it would get my panties in a bunch enough to make a thread about it online.

there is no panty bunching here, only curiosity. the clicks and crews and fads that make up an import scene are as facinating to me as watching teenagers interacting with eachother in a highschool cafeteria. Posting on IA can be like driving in Atlanta traffic - Either you're one of the asshats that's driving around for no reason pissing everyone off (cutting the gord, not using blinkers, lane diving, tail gating, going slow in the left lane etc...) and you're too stupid to realize it....because you're stupid. The other group of you are the smart ones fighting your way through the asshattery to get to a destination and seeing the aforementioned asshattery only makes your head want to explode. The second group of people eventually end up "acting" like the asshats just to blend in..but have fun confusing them with things like "knowledge" and "wit"...just like the drivers who become jaded to Atlanta traffic and start f.ucking with people just to blen in and not get walked all over.

So any day you dont have a load to carry on your rack you should entirely remove the rack from the vehicle??
Just because you occasionally use a rack doesn't mean you cant have one unloaded on a vehicle.

The point is ACTUALLY that it's their car. THEY DRIVE IT!! If they wanna drive it w/ a roof rack on increasing the drag co-efficient and reducing their gas mileage they are within their rights to do so.
People do dumb shit to their car --- this will always be, and I find it funny. But I find it more funny that other people worry about the dumb shit that other people do to their car.

Cool - anymore 4th grade comebacks? You should take this show on the road. Good thing I don't have any feelings or they'd really be hurt right now.
The verdict is that people can and will do what they want to THEIR cars and don't need your opinion, admiration, or approval unless it's solicited. And by the look of your box of bolts I don't think any1 will be asking for your raggedy ass opinion any time soon. Doesn't get any simpler than that.
