If you've been there enough times, you don't have to check shit.

Yeah that is RA. The picture was taken before the paving and way before the wall move. Picture is taken from top of esses.

ok...so now that everyone has agreed i'll question it...the turns all look quite similar but it doesn't look like much of a hill to the left in the picture, looks more like trees down below instead of the bathhouse up on the hill there.

of course most of us were not hanging out there 10 years ago either...or this is newer than i think...but i'll be the first to question if its even road atlanta...and yes i've been there plenty of times and been around the track quite a bit too.

no doubt at all it looks a ton like it but i'm honestly not %100 convinced that it is RA...just to stir things up, lol.

That's 394883% Road Atlanta, been there all my life, I work there, I do track days there, it's Road Atlanta. It's before the walls in the esses were moved back, you don't see 5's corner station because it's further up the hill a little. I mean look at the damn tire walls. Look at the clay. Look at the line. :screwy:

THIS IS ROAD ATLANTA. The picture looks edited anyway. :gay:

so looking at this and jasons post (saw you at the bmw shop the other day BTW)...if you take the above picture and draw a line from the guys front axle straight to the right...whatever turn you want to call that...is that not going downhill in the about picture?? but its where the uphill starts at RA

that is throwing me off too...

and yes everyone...at a glance it does still look %789078907 like RA, but i'm still wondering...believe it or not there are esses downhill at other tracks, not just in the most famous photo spot at road atl....lol

so anyone have a guess at the date?? and what year did the xb's come out anyhow??

Most of the old asphalt that got dug up when they rearranged the track (and i think everything they cut out at 12) was then put at the bottom of turn 4 and they filled over the top of it and repaved everything. I can't remember the exact amount but I am thinking it's in the range of several hundred truck loads of fill and debri is under where turn 4 is today...it was completed at the beginning of last year with a few of the earlier season events having to be postponed or canceled.

The picture COULD even be photoshopped, but it's Road Atlanta. The racing line, the color dirt, the trees, the tire wall, all of that is 100% Road Atlanta.

Turn 4 as in the entry of the esses? I've never heard that, why would they have?

Turn 4 as in the entry of the esses? I've never heard that, why would they have?Motorcycles mostly. Remember the HUGE amount that was cut out of 12 to make that turn safer? They took the outside wall of 12 and moved it all the way back to the road in front of the helicopter pad. That concrete wall and all that dirt was all trucked over to turn 4 leveling out the low spot then they paved over it. This was all done AFTER they repaved the entire track otherwise they would have lost the account for the 2 largest motorcycle races.

That's why all the pics of the essess that are over a year old look so different.

Here's after they cut the outside of turn 12 out (what you see today)...

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_TW0J2ESWowA/R-PPF6mt-QI/AAAAAAAAARg/g9FdGAcg91Y/s400/SchwantzSchoolMar08005.jpg

This is what it looked like before a year and a half ago ago...

http://static.panoramio.com/photos/original/7737736.jpg

Here's after they repaved it but before the outside of 12 and pit lane was changed...with the new pavement the bikes would be going too fast through 12 and the outside was already too dangerous as it was. A couple go-kart riders, one being female, died hitting the outside wall at 12.

Yeah I know the motorcycle additions, such a STUPID turn in the esses. :lmfao:

OK, so you mean they added it where they put the new chicane in there? That makes sense.

OK, so you mean they added it where they put the new chicane in there? That makes sense.yeah, the entire pit lane and the hill on the outside of turn 12 was dug up and trucked over to the lowest part of the esses starting at turn 4 (technically the entire area between 4 and 5 was raised).

Elbow

BUT added at the new chicane? Not on the actual real course?

The new chicane in 4 was the biggest fail I have seen. We had so many offs in the AMA test day last year, then last years first AMA practice we had over 40 offs before lunch, then decided to use the old esses.

I was told the esses were raised but from the photos i can't tell. The exact quote from a director while they were doing the changes was, "they were straightening the barriers and leveling the esses with the fill from 12".

Elbow
06-06-2009, 09:54 AM
Weird, I don't remember them doing that, and the dip at the bottom of the esses is still a mud pit lol. I know they moved the wall back, I figured you meant made the new chicane in the esses level, even though it's still off camber.

this is definitely road atl before panoz bought it and began renovationNegative, Don Panoz bought it in '96 and the bike is a Buell XB9R...first built in 2002. The only changes to the track until it was paved in 2007/08 was the 10a/10b chicayne to make it FIA approved ('97), the infield paddock, and the drift loop ('05). Then after it was repaved the walls were moved at Turn 12 and 4 in 2008.

Another view of the bike as it sits in turn 4 looking down the esses towards 5:

tons of fun, felt bad for holding up the high hp cars between the straights but oh well...i was giving her all she had, its just the 318, 4-bangin...was enough to pull away from chris through the esses there. DE1 is tons of fun but i wish we could pass in corners, that's my only real advantage with that car is out braking the bigger cars...deff not a bit of straight line power, lol.
