Does anybody know the difference between a s20 and a s40? i know one is obd1 and the other is obd2..? but how about the gearing? pretty noticable difference?

kinda the s40 if im not mistaken has longer gears..the s20 is a bit shorter u can tell when driving on the highway when your in 5th and the rpm is under 3200rpms which is good..better mpg

s20 is obd1 92-95
s40 is obd2 96-2000

as far as gearing goes, you need to be car specific. such as ex,si,dx,lx

both ex/si have the same gearing and are shorter then the dx,lx tranny's
performance wise your gonna want the ex,si transmission :goodjob:

fuel economy is a little better with the dx,lx models, but they are garbage and slow as balls.

Hope this answers your question.....

thanks guys that pretty much tells me what i wanted to know. it's goin in my ex. i have a s40 in it right now (just stock tranny). i just got the car about a week ago and he gave me the s20 with it because the clutch slipped and third gear was gone. whats the best fluid to run when i did my swap a while back i used honda synthetic fluid but i heard that the gm synchromesh is supposed to be better..? i know hondas are funny about some things.

in my 99 si i use regular gear oil, i'll look it up for you. ok looked it up and it says honda manual transmission fluid or equivalent 10W30 engine oil which i think is what is in mine. i wouldn't put the cheap stuff in it though.
