A motor is converting electric energy into mechanical energy. A engine is converting chemical energy into mechanical energy.

Engine 99% of the time, from time to time motor just slips out.
Even though they are 2 completely different things (engine = combustion, motor = electric) it's still understood whats being discussed.

An engine is a type of motor. It has motive power. A boat can have an inboard/outboard motor. The motor consists of an engine but it is a motor that causes it to move. Motorcycles, General Motors, Honda Motor Co. The term motor has became synonymous with electric powered but was originally the term motor in automobiles was used to describe what we know as an internally combustible engine compared to the old steam engines. So really it does not matter what you call it. I call it according to the context I'm saying it in. If I am talking in general I will say motor, because that is what makes the car move. If I am speaking of the actual internal parts I will say engine cause that is what it is. An engine is a motor but a motor does not have to be an engine.
