View Full Version : Video Game Addiction: Can an addict go to casual?

Well. This is kind of a personal question since it did affect me. I played this game that at first was very casual. Then over the course of 8 months, I became pretty hard core at it. Now, dont get me wrong, I have a life, a girlfriend, a career, and family. While trying to balance a regular 40+ hour a week job, I played this game approximately 30-50hours a week as well. Now Ive quit cold turkey for two weeks strong, but Im wanting to start playing again but at a controlled lessened amount. Do you all think this would be a bad idea? Thoughts and opinions welcome.

I had a video game addiction myself, not to the same game as you, but just to games in general. I stopped playing video games all together back in the winter and haven't looked back since. It is amazing to realize now just how much time it took in my life.

If you can play it in moderation while still balancing a healthy life apart from the game then I say go for it. It is only entertainment after all and we all need that in some form or another. :goodjob:

Totally agree. Dude I dissappeared for almost 8 months, stopped doing what I usually do, made new friends in this "game", and forgot everythign else. I hate to turn my back on it, but I want to play it casually, maybe an hour or two a night or something. Something ill have to think about.

LOL.. World of Warcraft?? YES it can be done - but man these games will fuck you up lol. I've seen it.

I believe as long as you do not let it consume you and take you away from your real friends then it is totally ok to give it a little time here and there. An hour or two a night on the game for may be an hour or two of tv to someone else. Like I said, in moderation it is harmless.

Of course, if you disappear again........intervention time. :smackass: :lmfao:

Im transferring my character to a different server so that I dont have any obligations to anyone and can start fresh as a casual player.

After an 8-5 day I used to come home and play till 1am almost. Ugh... it really did almost fuck me up.

I had the same thing happen with games. I'd come home from work and fire them up. I'd play until 1...2...3am. It was seriously starting to affect my job and even my health a bit. Really started to suck.

Nah I say those 30-50 hours that you spend playing the game you could put that time for better use. Another parttime job, working out, etc...

It happened to me in school. It kinda changed when we got kicked out of the computer lab and banned from coming back in. (We formatted the HDs and reinstall windows so we could install whatever lol)

I stopped playing games and picked up racquetball instead.

To me wow or any game of that type is dangerous, cause I use to play Lineage 2 and I played that nonstop. Two years of my life went into that game of course I made friends but It got to the point I was spending real life money to get fake money to due to the fact of the economy in the game lol. But over all pick up xbox live its an easier way to play and also quit if you find yourself in the "addiction phase" that's my :2cents:

Dude, I highly doubt you'll be able to stop after an hour. I don't play the game but it always comes down to "one more and I'm done." LOL, that never works. You'll start getting back into it I think. What about trying a different game?

Well heres the thing...

1. I play CoD4 a good bit, but only for about 30 minutes or an hour. Im just tired of it unless im playing with friends. Maybe when Modern Warfare 2 comes out... lol

2. That game is one of the few games I could play for 5 hours and not do anything just to kill some time. I think what affected me the most was those late nights being up.

3. Ill try it this week and see how it goes.

/emote is embarrased to even have posted this now lulz

Yesm Leisure Suit Larry was really a game. I think it was for PC only. It came out in the late 90's and quickly got banned....

I went through the same shit last year and finally got over it. I was playing RockBand 1 and 2 constant every night until about 1-2 am. I just looked at it as exercise (If you havent played Drums on hard/expert for hours straight, you cant say its not) About a month ago I just stopped playing. Now I keep it to about 2-3 nights a week and a 2 hours MAX. I also did the same for Forza 2 when it came out but I just got tired of that game.
Good luck with your addiction

I'd say judging by the striking 8-bit graphics that Leisure Suit Larry was from the late '80's/Early '90's. Them titties is all pixelated.:ninja:

I once met a guy who was addicted to WoW and meth. He said he used meth to play Wow for days on end without sleep. He lost his place so he would weasel his way in to stay with other people and have WoW/meth benders untill they kicked him out. Must be a shitty way to live. :screwy:

I was the same way on till i got preggo then i have stopped playing all together. Sometimes i would like to start playing again but i don't because i see how it affects my relationship with my Hubby and daughter. My father is really bad he works from the home building websites and that's all he does is play wow. He got my mom to play wow and i see my little brother going down hill because they don't pay him no attention.

hahahahaha... hit a nerve, did I????? lolerz.. you're so easy! :lmfao: :lmfao:

Yeah, but by virtue of the fact that this dude is your friend, he is way cooler/more normal than my bro and his gf... quite literally, they barely speak... even to each other. They just game.

When they hooked up she made him quit playing hah

Nope, no nerve struck either, just perplexed by the wording?

Youre right, I looked it up on Wiki. It started in 87. I was too young at that time to be knowing about adult themed games, lol.

Yes, I did the same thing. Then I came back and play casually. I even run a clan in my spare time (Vegas 2). Just don't fall back into the trap.

Im only an addict if i have a new game, or started playing an old one from the beginning again. Last week I started playing Metal Gear Solid 2 again from the beggining on hard and Ive played it as much as I could until I beat it again. Now im back to COD4 every other day again. Thinkin about getting the third one, Snake Eater, its old but its only like 10 bucks. I'll be an addict again until I beat it.

But I know how you feel, cause I was thinking of starting a game flix account but I didn't wanna spend all my free time playing games when I could be doing something productive instead. But I'd like to get my monies worth..

I do admit I had some addiction to video games in the past. When Halo 3, COD4, and COD w.a.w came out, I went to school in the morning, came home at 12, played till 4 then went to work. Came back at 8, ate dinner, got back on at 9pm and didn't stop till 12-1am in the morning. Needless to say that shit had to stop, I was neglecting my good friends, school, personal life and my car. Now I only play a couple hours a week. But once mw2 comes out...uh oh. I'll be in the same routine as before. And I won't feel bad about it either. =]

I've seriously thought about playing WoW, but the fear of addiction has kept me from picking it up. When I had City of Heroes/City of Villains I was on it non-stop for a while. I'd come home from work and hit the PC until about 4 hours before I had to go back to work. Small breaks to make ramen, a sandwich, or whatever but that was it. I feel your pain. lol
