I was whoreing on Egay, minding my own business looking for IC piping, and I stumbled upon this...: Honda civic low temp thermostat kit (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Honda-Civic-Low-Temp-Thermostat-Kit-23-00-shipped_W0QQitemZ370115881509QQcmdZViewItemQQptZMo tors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories?hash=item562ca02a 25&_trksid=p3911.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1205%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C 240%3A1318)

Now, my question is, will a 30 degree drop in opening temp for the thermostat be needed on a mild SOHC boost setup? Also, does this product look worthy for a test trial?

i wouldnt trust it. ur cooling system is critical to keep ur car running. something happens to it like it gets stuck closed, and say ur not paying attention to ur coolant temp gauge, then POP, someone will have to be gettin a headgasket and the head machined. i would make sure its a quality piece. just my opinion though

x2 i would run no thermostat before using it

Thanks for the advice. So basically, if it aint broke, don't fix it... lol. OEM for now.

It's not ALWAYS a bad deal on Ebay. Trust me. But I think with your mild build your fine with stock. There are brand name after market thermostats out there as well. You could do a manual fan over-ride or get bigger fans and or bigger radiator and see better results than with a thermostat.

A low temp thermostat is fine, The SR engineering one looks to be fine.. But you can go to any parts store and get a low temp thermostat, it has the temp rating on the bottom of it. Id consider it, especially if you have the oem paper thin radiator, every bit helps. And its something cheap, you cna run no thermostat in the summer..but if you want your heat in the winter..you might want to put it in!

here is an idea.. Why not using a Hondata ecu and lower your temp of the rad. fan kick on time while making your car more relaible with the Hondata?

low temp thermostats are fine if they are quality parts. I run a 180 degree in mine, versus the 198 that came in it stock.

i run a gates racing thermo with buddy club fan switch

I would get a quality one that has a failsafe that'd make it stay open if it fails

Honda factory theromstat is fine.. You just need to change the temp where it opens up at.. Either way a boosted honda needs Hondata.

Stock thermostat is fine, i never run lower temp t-stats in my boosted cars.

Hondata isn't necessary for a boosted honda either.

ok, then how else can you make sure your not knocking and also have boost cut or lean protection in case your af goes lean? How do you control upgraded injector compensation and also iat temps vs ignition retard? Etc, etc, and etc...

You can do it half-ass if you want..

are you guys daffy? you should never remove the thermostat, that creates hotspots in the motor. im not trying to start a flame war, but if you want to run your cooling system "open" so to speak, gut the thermostat and put it back in with no valve. there is a small amount of restriction needed to allow the water to actually absorb heat from the motor efficiently.
even if all of that is BS, what about the expansion rates of your engine components? they need to be up to temp to achieve their proper clearances.
anyway, i wouldnt change the temperature of your thermostat unless you genuinely NEED to. i would also be inclined to say thats more of a bandaid than a real solution.
and like it was already said, i would buy a reputable brand from a retail store before i got any important engine components from ebay.

hondata isn't the only one that can do all that. although my preference is for hondata, crome can do that too. for the generation of cars you have more experience of k-pro is really the best alternative and does this with all the parts that come with the car (pseudo wideband, knock sensors, etc). however, older gen honda/acura need some of this added to be able to be active w/ s-300 or crome.

but to get back on topic...don't go less than a 180* themostat, otherwise you'll be dropping below 170* which is the point in which the ecu goes to cold start changing fuel and timing enrichments for startup. if your car still runs hot with a 180* thermo, then you have other issues. i always recommend stock temp when you can.

I ran an ebay thermostat and fan switch in my ls hatch for a year driving on average 300+ miles a week....... I never ran hot until my fan motor took a dump

play it safe for now. if youre really worried about it getting hot, just take the thermostat out. but from experience.. brand new HG + no thermostat = COLD. my temp gauge rarely leaves C, even in 80-90 degree weather, unless sitting for a long time.
