I's forced perspective.... In a nutshell, the image is super stretched, and when viewed head on/from the correct angle, the eye sees it as three dimensional. Viewing it from other angles you can barely tell wtf it is lol. But yes, they are way cool, and mastering the technique takes time and skills.
