car sputters when given gas...

tach needle jumps around 2-3 hundred rpms but the actual engine rpms aren't fluctuating

(needle is reading incorrectly)

I am thinking it is a distributor problem being as the tach runs off the dizzy and I pretty sure the car would sputter if it was getting bad spark

my car was doing the samething. Plugs were in need of replacement as well as my dizzy cap and rotor button. New plug wires, plugs, Dizzy cap, rotor button, and internal coil and bye-bye sputter

Well, mine sputters due to a fuel problem, all of my ignition has been changed. I suppose, but u can also assume a fuel related issue.

Do u have the "launch control" feeling at or around 3k?

always start with the cheaper stuff, lol. spark plugs, wires. then move to the dizzy. if you still got the problem then you can try what blaknoise is goin at.
my blue teggy had the same prob and i replaced all three things and it fixed it.

Your tach reads from the distributor......I may have a distributor we could try and see if it will fix the problem.....

It's the motor. You need a new one.
