Just got this camera from a friend of mines who has updgraded, for free and in perfect condition. I want to get into photography as a hobby so wondering how good this camera is as a starting point?

I started with an Olympus point and shoot I won at a computer convention many many years ago. Learn basic fundamentals, develop your own style, and keep working at improving yourself.

Any and most camera manuals can teach basic terms and "what things mean". But for everything else the two best sites out there that are forum based are:
http://www.nikonians.org/
and
http://photography-on-the.net/forum/index.php
Both have an excellent member base.
