Here is the beginning of the interior "restore" work. Dash is all taken down except for the heater slider controls. Was trying to figure how to disconnect and decided to quit for the evening so I can have a fresh brain in the morning. But here is where I am.
First pic is the "new" dash. Second is how it was. Last is how it's sitting now. Later, QD.

Got all the wiring and bolt-ons from the old dash to the new one and now all the wiring is together with the new dash in the car. I have to find out what I'm missing now as the car won't start. It just clicks. I'm sure it's a wire under there somewhere as it ran perfectly before I started this. Ever since I went further than I could go where I couldn't tn around, I've regretted doing this. But at the same time, I'm glad that I did don something like this on my own. Lolol. It still isn't running. I realized that I could see everything from underneath (which is the best vantage point anyway) so I went ahead and got it in, also hoping the grounding issue would be resolved. I'm going to crawl under and look to see if there possibly any wires that are NOT hooked up. I do know there are two wires that have o-ring connectors that are NOT hooked to anything and they could be the ground I'm missing. We'll see soon. Here are two of the items that I'm sure need to be hooked to chassis. I don't know what the metal "relay" is and the black wire goes into the wiring harness that eventually goes back into the steering column. I must have misplaced (or kids got hold of them) the bolt or whatever and I don't have the correct size to try and get in on there. I found a hole on the chassis/frame under the dash where it looks like these two would screw into.
I can't find my voltmeter. I appreciate the forward. Maybe he can help out. Later, QD.

I know for a fact that they weren't on either of the yellow-painted bolts. Those are much thicker and they are the bolts that hold up the steering column itself. Ok, I read this page but not sure exactly what going on. Am I right that it wont start? Does it turn over at all or does it do nothing?
The connector in pic one will not fit on the painted bolt. The connector looks like it fits a M6 bolt (10mm head) where that bigger one is a M10+ (12/14mm). That car isnt old enough to have a 12v positive with a ring connector like that. Im 99% sure its a ground, for what I couldnt tell you without looking at the car.
From this angle in pic 2, that looks like a 3 wire relay if its a relay at all (Hazard flashers are 3 wire). If its IS a relay then it more than likely needs to be grounded.
If the car ist turning over at all, the wire in pic 1 wont fix it. No starting circuit that old will have a ground control of any sort for the starter. Youll need to check for 12v at the ign switch and then 12v when in the start position at the starter.
You can PM me about it if you want. No worries...

Hey Bus Driver J, I got the car to start this evening. I got a better connection using the jumper wire. Fired up and got it running and idling well. I do know there is one more black wire with )-ring connector in the center area of the dash (which, oddly enough, is where that single click comes from too) that is not connected. Bus Driver. Here is what is making the click noise when I start the car. This is under the dash. The wires that run up into it are green/pink and solid black and then a thicker black/white wire.
I also ran a wire from the thick black wire to a ground to see if grounding was an issue and nothing happened. I also ran it from the thin black wire with no result. Later, QD.

I looked over the entire wiring diagram and didnt see any 3 pin connectors with the same wire colors. So, Im not 100% sure what thats for. Will the car still start and run without that connected (by jumping the wire at the starter)? With the key on and that unplugged, what doesnt work that you can notice?

If it still starts and all without it then I wouldnt worry about it.
I think you just need to find the location of the neutral switch and make sure its connected. Thats the only thing in between the ign switch and the starter.
Make sure you have power at the black/white wire on the back of the ign switch when the key is turned to the start position. If you do then the ign switch is working.
If all else fails, just runa wire from the ign switch to the starter. I hate doing stuff like that but it wil work.

Yeah I went to the PAP where they have a 78 1st gen wagon and it didn't even have one of those there.
I was wondering if i could run a wire to the starter. Can you tell me how that would work if I can't find the loose wire (or whatever the problem)?

Bus Driver J
05-20-2009, 01:06 PM
I'd check for power at the back of the ignition switch first. According to the wiring diagram there are 4 black/white wires on the ign switch. One is power in, 2 are power out with key on, and one is power for the starter. Just make sure there is power coming out with it turned to start. If you do, run a wire from that wire to the little wire on the starter.

QD:
Was your car originally a Hondamatic, or was it a manual from the factory? If it was a Hondamatic, what did you do with the Neutral safety switch? The right way to do it is to unplug both connectors from the neutral safety switch and plug them into each other.
Before I found that out I just left the switch in, slid it to the "neutral" position and hid it under the carpet. It would wiggle out of "neutral" sometimes and the car wouldn't start untill I put it back.

It wasn't a Hondamatic. CVCCs all came with manuals. It was a 4speed converted to 5. I'm going up to Garage Zero Saturday so John can check it out. Together, I'm sure we'll conquer this the right way. Later, QD.

Welp, it's all fixed.
Thanks to John at Garage Zero, it was figured out that there are two identical wire connectors under the dash and I had mixed up the wires. Luckily nothing was damaged in doing so.
So the car is back to good and the dash swap was a success. Later, QD.
