Well I was thinking of buying a fish eye lens for my D40. I looked at the Nikon - Nikkor 10.5mm f/2.8G AF DX Fish-Eye Len. But it's $850 and that's way out of my league. For what I do, which is mainly just messing around. Nothing serious at all, I am a huge noob when it comes to cameras. I was looking at these screw on type on ebay and just curious if anyone has used these before, and are they suitable for what I want, which is just to play around. Or are they a complete waste of time and money? Thanks for any help! :goodjob:

Depends on what you're doing. You'll lose at least a stop and your IQ won't be as good.

But, it is cheaper.

They are pretty awesome honestly, I got that exact one that you posted in that picture and screwed it onto the 18-55 kit lens I have. It only cost me $40, I totally recommend it.

The Sigma lines are really affordable. The 10-20mm and the 12-24mm are good alternatives. I highly doubt you will be shooting anything that would require you to maintain a 2.8. Even in low light conditions you should use a tripod.

If you want a true fisheye, go with a Peleng 8mm.

truth.

or a zenitar.

keep in mind these are built like tanks but are manual focus.

peleng (http://shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&_trksid=p3907.m38.l1313&_nkw=peleng+nikon&_sacat=See-All-Categories)

Yeah. Alot of people use the fisheye and uses programs to stretch em out. pretty much what you'll be getting with the sig 10-20. As for fisheyes, I havent heard much about the pelengs or zenitars. Im probably picking up the nikon 10.5 soon

wait for the Sigma fixed 2.8 fisheye. Its going to be cheaper and probably on par with the Nikon.

yeah the quality of a $40 screw on isn't that great, but if you just want to play around it will get the job done.
