Portable CB radios are a plus! :goodjob:
We'll discuss the route once we meet and I have credit card sized maps printed with all the roads and general landmarks labeled just in-case anyone gets seperated...we normally make several stops to re-group anyways: couple gas stations, major interesections, etc. Goood times, just starting saving up for gas money now... :D

Hey Jason,
Let me know if you need an extra person to lead a group. Call me on my cell and we can talk about the run. They are supposed to be doing construction on some of the roads that I know you are going to hit. They want to get some of the problem areas patched before the ice gets here in the winter! I was at the DOT dropping off some plans for a project the other day and one of our contacts there was telling me that in 2 months they are actually going to blast the rock at dead mans turn above the rock-wall on 60! Then you will actually be able to see past that turn! Another place to pass the tourist F#$%@!

Be careful up there... I just went this past weekend on my motorcycle up by Suches with two friends. A dude on a bike went off the side around a 180 hairpin, and the place was CRAWLING with cops besides. I'd take my bike up with you guys, but I'll be on a plane to D.C. for business by time you all wake up to go leave. Remember to let HiPsi take point... his bike should embarass all the cages through those chicanes (even with a passenger on the back).

Looks like we may have a good turnout, i've posted this on both driftmechaniks.com and team-integra.net and have a few friends that aren't on the forums that want to go too...I'll have the list up soon.
My parents told me the "new" sheriff up there is cracking down on the mountain roads...hey john, do you think you can get Eddie Cole and Adam Scott to be deputies that day? ;)
Truegiant
10-04-2005, 11:25 AM
It isnt the local cops that I am worried about (obviously between you and i we graduated with half of the lumpkin sheriff's office!) Its the GSP! The new sheriff is paying to have extra GSP on the mountain until winter hits. There have been articles in the dahlonega paper every week about the sheriff targeting motorcyclists. He said it will be his personal duty to take care of the rising motorcycle problem we have in the mountains. I think it is horse shit but since I have to drive by the sheriffs house everday going up the mountain to the house I give him the one finger salute! And besides anybody that knows how to ride a bike knows its not the experienced riders that cause problems its the newbies with there drive out tags that crash and cause problems.
Oh and I will get the schedule for the local cops patroling the county on that day!
speedminded
10-04-2005, 11:41 AM
...exactlyyy, i know a few of the GSP's too but the problem is they don't talk much on the radio so I can't tell where they are at. We'll just need a couple scouts to run up first...hopefully i'll be able to make it up the weekend or sometime during the week before to check for any construction. Trying to get this Porsche brake kit together asap to do a lil R&D.

actually cars tend to be able to move up the hill faster than me because i only believe in using one lane where everyone else uses both... everyone feels the need to prove they can run with a bike up the mtn instead of running their own pace and holding a damn lane :(

you guys can blow by them in cars doing 120 and i can pass following you doing about 70 on the bike and guess who they're gonna tag? ;). they profile bikes like mad up there, seen it with my own eyes on more than a few weekends. i've watched as cars blow by doing 65-70mph down 129 and GSP/lumpkin will just sit there, but then a sportbike will pass a few minutes later coming down at around the same pace and they will immediately jump in behind them like it's a matter of national security. i fail to see how a 3000lb car isn't more dangerous at those speeds than a 400lb sportbike, but as truegiant said it's due to the influx of noobs who think they can go buy a 600ss bike and suddenly they are posessed by the spirit of Rossi himself. 2 turns later up the mountain they find out they don't know how to lean and either cross into the oncoming lane or send their pretty bike off a cliff. happens every damn weekend too :(.

i'd have to agree with you. i can pretty easily outrun cars that are running a normal spirited pace up there, but i don't even try to get around the people that think if you're trying to overtake it's a race. i've been on the outside passing and have people send the tail of the car out being in over their heads trying to stay ahead of me for some reason.

hmm - the reason i thinkg they also target bikes more is that there's a higher risk of death? I mean - no airbags or very few means of protection... I'd rather hit a tree going off a cliff in a car than with a bike... annyywayyys
guess we're just cruisin

guess we're just cruisinsortof, but their job is to protect the community, i can't decide whether they are being targeted more for protection or income...and cars are a much deadlier weapon than a bike, especially to other bikes, bicycles, pedestrians, etc...now a rider driving wrecklessing with a passenger should be targeted.

I should have 4 new fat and sticky Falken Azenis on the Corolla by the time the 30th comes around. Although I've somewhat lost interest in speeding (even driving quickly) on any mountain roads during the day time. I'd to go and tag along at a slightly slow pace... 1 (11mph+ over) ticket for me and my license is gone.
Does anyone ever go up into the mountains late at night?

Tip for all noobs on the mountain!
Understand that some people naturally have a better driving ability than others. KNOW THAT IT IS O.K. to drive slow if necessary. There is no reason that you should drive outside your comfort zone just to impress someone else. Just because your car is capable of handling extremely well in the mountains does not mean that it will hang with a talented driver. You can ask Jason (speedminded), that even a stock ford ranger pickup with a descent driver can hang with a sportbike travelling at moderate speeds. When I was a instructor with a winston cup driving school the first thing we teach students is, just because our winston cup school cars will do 180+ easy, does not mean that you can drive them that fast. There are several people who will be attending this mountain run and I am sure that if you tell one of those people that you do not feel comfortable running mach10 up the mountain they will understand and pick a comfortable pace for everyone.
THERE are several who can vouch - You will only look like an ass if you drive outside your comfort zone and crash on the mountain. Like HiPSI said - he would rather cruise safely at 70 than be stupid at 100! (Not exactley what he said but close enough)
Stormhammer
10-05-2005, 03:17 PM
I'm with that - it'll be my first mountain run, maybe we just do a little cruising at a comfy pace to get people just sorta know where their comfort zones are?
I also dont want to be one of the arrogant assholes who cut to the inside of left turns of the oncoming lane - ARGH!

Aslong as weather permits Im in. It will be my first time, so it should be lots of fun. Any tips on Noobs at the mountains?
(these are generalized for everyone)
#1: Stay in 1 lane... if you have to use 2 you're in over your head
#2: ALWAYS check your 6 before changing lanes, bikes will come up on you faster than you can think and if you just cut lanes you may end someone's life (hell it could be me)
#3: no matter what everyone else is doing, you will run a pace that's comfortable for YOU and you only... you will not get left behind or ditched. there are plenty of stopping points along every part of the route and if there's a turn at least one person will wait for you to show you where you need to go.
#4: NEVER EVER EVER CROSS THE DOUBLE YELLOWS... this is completely inexcusable and a quick way to die.
#5: don't let neonracer near lighter fluid at vogel
#6: when on a road that's a single lane in both directions, don't worry about the person behind you. if they can't deal with your pace then you can either be nice and find a pulloff to let them pass, or if it happens to be a bike just slow up on a straight slightly and wave them by.
#7: leaf lookers and bicyclists will be out in large numbers now that fall is starting, watch out for pedestrians at trail crossings and pulloff areas. they are the ones that will call the cops to the mountains and end the fun early, just be courteous.
#8: if you're on a road with driveways/houses/churches then slow it down passing these spots. again if you piss off the locals then the fun ends.
#9: refer to #1-#8 to refresh your memory
#10: just use some damn common sense.
other tips:
-don't ride the ass of someone on a bike no matter how slow they are going
-always try to judge someone's movements... if they are hopping lanes or hauling ass down the straights and parking it in the corners, lay back and let them go or find a safe place to pass and make your presence known
-if you see someone on a bike tapping the top of their helmet with their hand, it means there is police action up ahead, slow the hell down... it's nice to wave back if they warned you btw ;)

Stay in your lane, let faster cars by.
Just be cautious at all times and never let your guard down.
I've only done "mountain runs" very very late at night (1-4 am) and with the roads being damned near empty it requires 100% concentration on the drivers behalf.
Seems like there's a whole slew of others things to worry about during the day so just stay alert and don't take your eyes off the road for a second.
i suck at mountain driving.....

New guy to Atlanta chiming in. Anyways, I'm interested in the run and if I can I'd like to go.of course you can! Anyone willing to follow the "rules" that Erin posted above is more than welcome to join. I've organized dozens of runs in the last several years with no tickets or accidents occuring and would like to keep it that way [minus one minor mishap where someone went off due to brake fade but came back one with just a muddy wheel and small ding, ahem...he's welcome back too ;)]

Don't know if your planning on updating the list or if more people need to bring stuff but I'll bring something don't really care what if needed.I'll update it everytime someone wants to bring something...in the past, the list normally doesn't get full until a week before the meet.

I'm going to try to make this one. I want to hit the mountains but can't afford going up to the GAP before winter.
The last time I went I was in an auto 97 Accord...this time I'll have my lude!
I should have my camera mount installed for this ride...hopefully I'll get some good video of the days activities! ;)
Jason, let me know if there is anything needed for the cook-out. Also, make sure to post the entrance fee amount in the first post so that all are prepared for it. I didn't even think about it last time!

OK, I just got it all cleared. I'm good for that Sunday. :goodjob:
My boys will be with me too. They love to ride in the Lude and I remember them enjoying playing in that stream at Vogul last time (though it may be a bit cooler this time)!

there is no better car for anywhere near what i paid. M3 are absoloutly amazing in so many ways. i test drove an NSX, and choose the M3 for a few reasons. if u can get your hands on a nice one, jump at the chance.
so yes, i am taking the M, suspension should be done by then.
One of my buddies sent me this link and I'd like to try to make this as well. I buy/sell a lot of M3's and am getting my turbo one tuned right now. Also have '95 silver one for sale. They truly are an absolute blast, and are way too much fun to drive....
For those of you that can't make this mountain run, we're renting out Little Talladega on the 28th. $100.00/person. Call me at 678.575.1257

if this many people actually show then the people that know the roads need to each take a group and possibly run different routes to keep things a little easier on the newer people and keep the group sizes down. 40 cars with each other is just bad news waiting to happen, 10 or less per group is hard enough to keep track of.

Honestly we don’t know. So tomorrow I’m going to be driving him around and going to try and get this problem fixed :( and the part I hate the most is he's only had this car for 6 months. Hell yeah! Now you don't have to fex-ex those burgers to us! lol  That would have been a hellacious drive back. Glad the schedule wasn't mixed up.

My dad and I are interested in attending one of these events. It probably wont be the one coming up on the 30th, but if someone could p.m. me with some information on when these mountain runs take place, and just a quick overview of how it works I would greatly appreciate it.

Ordered my new Falkens today, had the brakes bled by a professional so they should work well (Hawk HPS+ pads, and Brembo brakes) and the stupid AE86 will be having it's TRD 4.3 final gear installed by friday.
I'll see you all there...

Made a small run up saturday. Everything was good except the enormous amount of gravel on wolf pen between lake winfield scott bridge and vogel. But that is typical. Cannot wait for the weekend.! i'm fawked, they are just now starting to prime my car, sometime today...and they still have my bumper for paint but i need it now to fabricate the new spoiler and splitter plus J3 Racing still hasn't machined the hats for the brake kit because they been so busy racing. Our shop (raceworks) is closing thurs. for a couple test days in Virginia this weekend so i really need to get everything before then or i won't be able to get it done for Sunday. Need a 4 wheel alignment and Raceworks has one of the few racks that my car can get up on...then even if i do get the car back i have at least 8 hours of cleaning before i want anyone to see it, not including all the prep work to get it ready for the run

...it really sucks because i'm off work all of next week and not going to VIR for the endurance race until next wed or thurs...if i do get the car complete before this sunday what the heck am i gonna do for 3 days after the run?! (the racecars will be prepped and already in Virginia) hmmm...wait, i know...i'll just drive...who wants to go on a 2 or 3 day road trip? oh wait, since i have to be in Virginia thursday anyways maybe i'll just take the blue ridge parkway all the way up...or as far up as i can get in a day...to drive back down to VIR for the race then just come back sunday. i think too much.

there are people saying that they might not hang, this is not a race. There will be groups that go slow as well. Just to let everyone know, lumpkin county road department just finished cutting a majority of the roadside banks and such for visibility; however, there is debree on the road. I think that with the winds we have had there is not going to be to big of a problem but, Jason I know you are going to want to tape the bumper and sides. I think as long of everything that we are going to need we can stop off at walmart before going up the mountain or in dawsonville or something. i will bring an extra cooler for the last minute items. Because of the cooler weather (as of the latest report) GSP is not going to have two designated deputies up there like the previous weekends. Cant wait for the weekend!
hey can i come ill bring cheese lettuce tomatos i want to see some mountain stuff never done that ill be in my supra
OK, I think I have my camera mount setup and working. I have to charge the battery first to truly test it though!
BTW, my camera is from like 98. It's the old school one that's like 3 times the size of todays cam-corders...but it works! ;)

i've gotten like 4 or 5 off eBay for $15-20 each.
Is it easy to hook up? I may look into this later.
I got my palmcorder hooked-up and running. Did a test record on the way to work. Not too bad! I'll have to see if I can find a cord since the battery is very old and probably won't last too long.
BTW, my car is now full. It appears that both my boys and my wife, Amy, will be going. We'll have to see how she "holds up". The time she went to the Gap w/ me, she was feeling sick! :)

Most camcorder's have a video-in so you could hook one of these up to it then plug the transformer into a 12v power inverter. Hit record and you're done.
